In other news, the geese are filling their crops with grit from the molehills. Contrary to many farmers’ beliefs this does the geese (and their eggs) no harm. They have healthy digestive systems to deal with any naturally occurring soil bacteria and the grit helps them break down their diet of grass and grains. #Permaculture #SmallHolding #Geese

The "green pastures" image used to market free-range eggs is pretty much BS. Granted, it's better than no outdoor access at all. But domestic chickens are derived from Asian jungle fowl, their natural habitat being the forest edge. Out in the open they are vulnerable to predators.They still know that, 12,000 years of domestication later.
If you can find them and afford them: there are some (not nearly enough) examples of silvopasture poultry in the world.

Rotational grazing season finally arrived this week. Just as well. I'm sick of hauling hay and they are sick of eating it. The fresh cheese cultures order has been placed. Here's to feta, quark and camembert to come.
