Currently taking my time to read this scintillating and heartbreaking work, Second Hand Time by Svetlana Alexievich. A huge (700 page) distillation of so many monologues from women (and some men) who reminisce, idolise/idealise and grieve about life before the fall of the Soviet Union. The voices are those of the subjects, but she weaves a fascinating cloth from it all.

@stuffifound

After World War II, America hired former Nazis and placed them in high positions in their government. We shouldn't be taking advice on how to deal with Nazis from America of all places. ⬆️ @stux >> In what reality would it be logical that a country that has been attacked and fighting for it's very existence for the last three years needs to repay the support they got 😠

It's a lot more than that.

In 1994, #US and #Russia promised security guarantees to #Ukraine after the #SovietUnion was dismantled.

In exchange, Ukraine was required to transfer all nuclear warheads to Russia and agree to become a non-nuclear weapons state, which they did.

That’s #hypernormalization. It’s a term coined by Alexei Yurchak in his book, “Everything Was Forever, Until It Was No More.”

Yurchak argues that, when the #SovietUnion fell, it came as a shock—but also not. In short, everyone had long-stopped believing in the Soviet Union as a system.

Soviet citizens, bureaucrats, and apparatchiks went through the motions without recognizing the system’s legitimacy.
