Edit: Solved, my third try blindly typing "down", "left", "enter" etc. to change the default display worked!

Dear #thinkpad bubble,

T460 with apparently a broken internal screen. It boots and I get something on an external display, but only some time after booting started (maybe when Linux is switching the graphics during display).

Is there a way to access the BIOS and switch the default to "external display"? Without me "seeing" the BIOS on screen?

My setup <3 <3 <3:

#PS5 for current gen games. #GOG (with Heroic Launcher) also, but to a much lesser extent. #Retroarch for emulating older consoles and computers. #Chiaki-ng for PS5 remote play.

My laptop is a humble (but I still like it very much) refurb #Thinkpad T490 with a 1080p display I upgraded for full SRGB colour gamut coverage (calibrated with an old ColorMunki Display) running #LMDE 6.

#Knockoff #3rdParty #Thinkpad #batteries, I tell ya.

Who feels my pain? ;)

Here is my #bio / #introduction just for the bsd.cafe community:

Hi, I'm R.L. I've dabbled in the fediverse since 2018 (originally mastodon.host (sadly defunct), then librem.one around 2019, then fosstodon starting in April 2022, then alpha.polymaths.social in fall 2023, and finally polymaths.social last October).

Last week, I migrated my main fediverse account from the excellent fosstodon.org to polymaths.social to take advantage of the camaraderie there, and of course the generous post character count limits. XD

I've dabbled in Linux since 1997, used it at home since 2000, and used it full time uninterrupted as my daily driver since 2019.

I've dabbled in the BSDs since 2022 or so, and currently have an #OpenBSD #Thinkpad which I use as a dedicated writing machine.

I love the power (hardware compatibility, feature set) and ease-of-use of Linux, and the "purity" and "unixyness" of the BSDs.

I was an infosec analyst and sysadmin in a previous life, but have left that behind, for my own sanity's sake. ;)

This will be my backup account, so please definitely follow me at @rl_dane@polymaths.social, but I look forward to having enjoyable chats on here as well from time to time.

Many thanks to @stefano@bsd.cafe for adding me!

P.S., Thanks for all the boost/retoot love! ❤️ ❤️ ❤️

When I recently installed #FreeBSD 14.2 on the "new" #Thinkpad T15 Gen1 for my mother, I was first excited to see the installer load #iwlwifi. And later disappointed it's *still* restricted to 802.11g.

But configuring #lagg in #failover mode over lan and #wifi is an awesome feature, and as this machine will be operated almost 100% of time in a docking station connected via 1000-BaseT, its fine for now. Still hoping to see newer wifi standards supported ... I see there's work going on from bugzilla and other sources.

Man, so many YT Shorts videos be like,

"Hey gamer guy, I bought a flobbyprock garbleflink GPU but my CPU is only a snazzysaurus rhinoplasty! What should I do?!?"

Me: GET A LIFE. And get off the hardware consumerism treadmill, ya hoser.

Written from my glorious piece of crap #thinkpad. (Nah, actually my 2022 LG Gram, but it's a work machine ;)

@george

It's still a nifty little machine. The body is a wee bit beat up: The hinge took some abuse when it fell face-first one time, so it opens way more than it should, and the screws holding it together eventually fatigued the thin aluminum frame near the hinges to the point that I had to get bigger screws, because the holes became larger than the stock screw heads.

There is one piece of blue painter's tape holding the left part of the hinge together, because I got tired of screwing it back together every few days.

But for the money, especially back in 2021, it's been a great little machine. I could only properly replace it with a machine of comparable or less weight, so I guess I'll save up a little bit for a used X1 Carbon.

Mine will be 4 years old of nearly daily use (definitely daily use until early last year when I got my #Thinkpad X260) in a little less than a couple months! :D

Not sure I can recommend it new today, as the hardware is over five years old. And of course, the webcam is useless, the trackpad is a pain, and Linux on ARM is still not a fun experience.

But the screen is crisp and lovely, and at least I feel like the keyboard is a joy to type on.
