@randahl
Let's analyze :
- Global > 10k > 30k - x3
- Coal > 4k > 10k > - x2,5
- Gas > 1k > 6,5k - x6,5
- Renewables > 2k > 10k - x5

1st WE MUST DECREASE ! (a.k.a spoil from richest people privacies, put in common and distribute from needed).

2nd COAL is, though it is increasing, the most 'relatively decreasing' ressource.

3rd RENEWABLE (increase) is challenging GAS (one).

I may conclude :
I do disagree your take 'It matters not'. Yes ! It does matter !
let's make the change. #optimisme #militantisme #decroissance

Moi, ce programme me conviendrait parfaitement. Et puis écrire aussi, et faire des photos. Na.

What we don’t get even a nod to in this article, because energy transition journalism seemingly *doesn’t care*, are considerations like:

- what is the carbon footprint of China’s renewables (rebuildables) build out?
- how does it relate to China’s energy demand and on-going trajectory of fossil fuel use?
- what are the implications of having to rebuild it all in about 30 years?
- what does it mean to win a race in which we all might lose?

Had a quick read up on NPUs (Neural Processing Unit) on TechRadar – techradar.com/computing/cpu/wh – and am very unsurprised to encounter

“NPUs are paving the way for a smarter, more efficient computing experience”

I have no time for this spin. Our culture is addicted to growth at the expense of anything lasting.

A more efficient this or that is going to make fk all difference when we should have put the brakes on decades ago but are going full tilt instead :/

lesoir.be/595863/article/2024-

C'est pour continuer à faire baisser la mortalité infantile qu'il faut -entre autres- réfléchir au futur de l'humanité.

One of the themes of Steven Zaillian’s Ripley is steps. Lots of steps. Atrani’s postmaster repeatedly directs Tom Ripley to go “Su, su, su” – up, up, up.

I wanted to find a picture of Andrew Scott climbing the steps towards the light in the narrow passageways of Atrani but maybe this one is more apt.

When EV purchasing goes up, up, up, and renewables build-out goes up, up, up, but emissions don’t go down, down, down, what then?

What are our next steps after the flood?

…I commuted, and secured a big pay increase in return for more responsibility. But…

I wasn’t cut out for the role, so after several more years I left and chose… a form of degrowth.

My earnings more than halved. They’ve stayed there. And then related choices came along.

I didn’t so much choose to stop flying as not flying chose me. I couldn’t afford it.

So, confirmation bias FTW!
(Yes, I see the obvious flaw in that notion 😆)

I’ve been reflecting on why I find #decroissance appealing – apart from the biophysical imperatives of it – and I think a large part of the answer is confirmation bias.

Around the turn of the millennium London career life became a net negative. With two infant children, we were searching for a step up the housing ladder and the only option was to mortgage ourselves up to the hilt to buy just one more room, or move out.

We moved out but that wasn’t enough…

The most intriguing observation from Tim is that there is always more inequality in higher energy systems.

He’s a physicist who studies clouds (among other things). He noted that the lowest energy cloud formation is fog, which has highly similar sized droplets. At the other end of the scale, cumulonimbus have everything from microscopic droplets to giant hailstones.

So we might conclude that the path to less inequality is to have a lower energy footprint

…a corollary to this is that just like every other creature, we exploit gradients and are subject to the same power laws.

We’ve just been more ingenious at harnessing combustion and doing everything at scale.

The more energy we find a way to harness, the bigger our economy grows. This makes it likely that renewables will be *additive*. Which has been the pattern of our energy history

My attempt at Tim Garrett’s model☝️ in bullet point form:

- everything in life is pushing energy along networks
- all networks are built of matter
- having built a network, there is a corresponding energy demand to keep that network functional
- but networks are always in the process of decay so they always need maintenance and renewal
- too little and it decays, too much and there is a window for growth and for power laws to do their thing
- and here we are
