#ScribesAndMakers 10, Book cover you like.

I'm absolutely smitten with Andrew Lang's original 1900s fairy book covers, charmingly illustrated by Henry Justice Ford. So much so, that I've taken to recreating and restoring the covers in detail so I can make them into notebooks and preserve them.

Currently, I have three restoration designs, and I am working on the lilac one. For which I really could use some more detailed images, so if anyone has one.🙏

Hello from Dublin!

Yesterday we went to Marsh’s Library, a reference library with some of the oldest printed books in the world! We couldn’t touch the books, but photos were allowed.

This library was also caught in the crosshairs of the rebellion in 1916, so some of the books have bullet holes in them (none shown).

Such a cool place! 😍

Am browsing a Victorian sewing manual, as I am wont to do. Have one of those little decorative multi-tier tea service or cake stands taking up space in the cupboard, unused? Well, do the Victorians have a solution for you!
Embellish the heck out of the contraption and put some sewing things on it. 😆

An illustration, very zoomed in, scanned from the pages of an old book. There's a three tier service tray contraption, the kind you'd see Jane Austen characters have tiny biscuits, cucumber sandwiches and such served from. Here it has been bedecked with embroidered little valances and coverings. There are little beads hanging off the triangular flaps, like bunting but not, with little flowers and lace edges and whatnot. On the different trays there are sewing supplies, like bobbins, thimbles, knitting needles, scissors. It looks ridiculous, twee and kind of amazing. Would certainly work as a decorative place to put all of the usual faff when not in use. The text below it reads: "An unusual work-table made in the form of a miniature 'dumb waiter'. Each tier is edged with elaborately embroidered and decorated valances. 1876."

I have received a book that belonged to my grandmother. It is entitled “Enquire Within Upon Everything”; this edition was published in 1906.
As promised, it contains information on everything.

Some of my favourites are: a recipe for turnip wine, the rules of whist, and how to apply leeches for (very questionable) medical treatment.

I’ll be tooting excerpts from random pages.

This book was given to my grandmother in 1909, while she was living on Liugong Island in Weihaiwei #Oldbooks #BookOfEverything
