Deborah Edwards-Oñoro<p>For folks who grow swamp mallow from seed indoors, have you had any issues transplanting it? </p><p><a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/gardeni" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gardeni</span></a>.g <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Zone6b" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Zone6b</span></a></p>
Deborah Edwards-Oñoro<p>Magnolia trees are blooming in our neighborhood. Forsythia started blooming a little over a week ago. </p><p>This morning I saw my first-of-year hyacinths in bloom in a neighbor's backyard. </p><p>Some of my daffodils have flower buds. Crocus (started blooming in late February) and snowdrops (started blooming the last week of December) finally stopped blooming last week. </p><p><a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/gardening" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gardening</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/SpringFlowers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SpringFlowers</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Zone6b" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Zone6b</span></a></p>
Richard Rollinson<p>Had a minor setback on my gardening spring this year. My Gall bladder burst on 22 March and I've been in hospital until yesterday. My daughter (the Botanist) stepped in and came home for a few days to keep things ticking over in the propagation room. My somewhat limited mobility and lifting restrictions are going to make things interesting for a while... All the best, everyone!<br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/gardening" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gardening</span></a> <br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/Allotment" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Allotment</span></a> <br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/NewEngland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NewEngland</span></a> <br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/zone6b" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>zone6b</span></a> <br><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/gardening" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>gardening</span></a></span></p>
Deborah Edwards-Oñoro<p>Any tips for taking cuttings from my Red Osier dogwood (Cornus sericea) to propagate?</p><p>I've never taken dogwood cuttings before. My attempts last year to propagate Buttonbush (Cephalanthus occidentalis) failed. </p><p><a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/gardening" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gardening</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/zone6b" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>zone6b</span></a></p>

Richard Rollinson<p>Some more signs of hope! One of my yellow crocus bulbs has flowered and the "volunteer" crocus patch in the grass has put up 12 new flowers. BTW, BeetBear calls these "bear tulips" because they show up when his family is waking up for the spring.<br>😀 <br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/BeetBear" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BeetBear</span></a> <br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/gardening" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gardening</span></a> <br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/Allotment" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Allotment</span></a> <br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/NewEngland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NewEngland</span></a> <br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/zone6b" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>zone6b</span></a> <br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/BloomScrolling" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BloomScrolling</span></a> <br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/spring" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>spring</span></a></p>
Richard Rollinson<p>Finally! After about 2 month's delay due to bad winter weather, I have finally finished pruning the last of my apple trees. This one is about 50 years old and is a heritage New England variety called "Baldwin". Makes the best pies ever and the apples keep a good, long time. Now on to prune the raspberry patch. 😀 <br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/gardening" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gardening</span></a> <br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/Allotment" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Allotment</span></a> <br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/NewEngland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NewEngland</span></a> <br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/zone6b" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>zone6b</span></a> <br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/apples" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>apples</span></a> <br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/Orchard" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Orchard</span></a> <br><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/gardening" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>gardening</span></a></span></p>
Richard Rollinson<p>Now that we've had a few days above freezing, mud season is upon us. Most of the garden is no-go at this point and muck boots are a must. With the underlying soil still frozen, the top layer gets saturated quickly and turns in to a messy slurry of liquid mud. It will stay this way until the rest of the frost leaves the ground. Hopefully soon. 😬 <br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/gardening" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gardening</span></a> <br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/Allotment" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Allotment</span></a> <br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/NewEngland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NewEngland</span></a> <br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/zone6b" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>zone6b</span></a> <br><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/gardening" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>gardening</span></a></span></p>
Deborah Edwards-Oñoro<p>There's about 2-3 inches of snow on the grass, the ground is frozen in southeast Michigan, and the temperature this morning is a balmy 37 degrees Fahrenheit (that feels like 27 degrees with 20 mph west wind). </p><p>It's that time to get started gardening! </p><p>Time for cold stratification for seeds, that is. </p><p>(I didn't know dill benefited from cold stratification.) </p><p><a href="https://www.ruralsprout.com/seeds-you-need-to-refrigerate/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">ruralsprout.com/seeds-you-need</span><span class="invisible">-to-refrigerate/</span></a></p><p><a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/gardening" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gardening</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Zone6b" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Zone6b</span></a></p>
Richard Rollinson<p>It's been a while since it was this cold here. Woke up to 5½⁰F / -15⁰C. Hasn't been this cold since February, 2023. Reminds me of my Forestry school days in Paul Smiths, NY. Picture from winter 1968. It's cold out! 🥶 <br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/gardening" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gardening</span></a> <br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/Allotment" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Allotment</span></a> <br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/NewEngland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NewEngland</span></a> <br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/zone6b" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>zone6b</span></a> <br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/Winter" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Winter</span></a> <br><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/gardening" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>gardening</span></a></span></p>
Richard Rollinson<p>How it was in June vs. today! Beet Bear is still asleep and I'm making mince pies to eat while I look at seed catalogs. 😀 <br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/gardening" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gardening</span></a> <br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/Allotment" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Allotment</span></a> <br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/NewEngland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NewEngland</span></a> <br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/Zone6b" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Zone6b</span></a> <br><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/gardening" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>gardening</span></a></span> <br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/BeetBear" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BeetBear</span></a></p>

We finally had a freeze here in our little corner of #Zone6B, a full month after our average first frost date.

I'm always amazed at how the first frost will reduce a tomato plant to almost nothing. It's like steaming a whole bag of spinach, and ending up with two tablespoons of greens.

"I Aten't Dead" So says the sign appearing next to BeetBear as he continues to slumber amongst our apple stores. He started napping in mid Oct. when the gardening finished for the season. It's been quite dry here for the last 2 months, with only 1.35"/34mm of rain since end of Aug. Last rain was 20 days ago. It's getting pretty dusty out there! Hope everyone is keeping well! (Apologies to Pratchett fans)😀

Back on 29 September, I posted about my carrots-in-a-pot. Today's update shows a better view of the way the carrots grow in the pot. We have harvested about 2 dozen carrots so far, so now there's room to see them close-up. Also they are expanding so much that they've split the pot. I have to hunt around for another pot of at least 12 gallon (45 liter) to use next year. 😀
