Loch Dunmore - signs of #beavers but no sightings (not surprisingly in the noon sunshine). Lovely day here. There’s also a disappointing amount of litter (fencing, a tv aerial and other junk). I always find it so hard to understand why some people treat nature as a big rubbish bin.

My parents took their kids on many nature walks and hikes when we were growing up which is where my love of nature and rambling outdoor walks comes from.

One time we walked by a dried-up old pond and saw an abandoned beaver’s lodge there.

I still think about that lodge sometimes and hope the beavers who lived there built wonderful new homes in nearby bodies of water.

Very clear evidence of #beavers activity. You can see their many chew marks on this stump. This is in a small #Saanich community park, stewarded by citizens who live beside little Calvert Lake.

Access to trails is off of Prospect Lake Rd & easy to miss if you're not paying close attention. Only room for 2 cars to park on roadside pullouts. The trails aren't very well maintained & you can easily get lost around them. I've ended up in someone's backyard once, trying to hike back out. Wear long pants because there's a lot of places you have to bushwhack through along tiny footpaths. Lots of salal, Oregon grape, lady ferns (excellent for fiddleheads harvesting) & mushrooms.

Czechia's €1m dam built for free by beavers: Here's where else they're doing good work.

A family of beavers made global headlines earlier this year when they built a dam exactly where authorities had been planning one in Czechia, saving taxpayers around €1.2 million.

#Beavers - allowed back in #England for the first time in centuries (I hope their working visas are up to date)

Bold claims but..

"Beavers create useful habitats for wildlife and reduce flooding by breaking up waterways, slowing water flow and creating still pools."

" The industrious animals recently saved the Czech government £1m by building a dam."

Good!

A Chicago environmental nonprofit, Urban Rivers, is asking for help in naming a "remarkably rotund" beaver that lives on the bank of the Chicago River. The "extra spherical" rodent is believed to be pregnant, and the group's volunteer coordinator Stephen Meyer says that his team hasn't been able to weigh her, but she can be heard on camera waddling across the dock and cracking ice beneath her paws, according to @BlockClubCh. Here are some of the names suggested by people on Reddit. Which gets your vote? Tell us in the comments if you have a better idea, and submit it to Urban Rivers at the second link.
