“The Roman ruler Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus relinquished near-absolute authority in 458BC & humbly returned to his farm putting #civic #virtue above personal gratification & the trappings of #power. In 1797, when Britain’s #KingGeorgeIII heard from artist Benjamin West that his fmr RevolutionaryWar adversary Pres #GeorgeWashington was to set a model of #patriotic #humility in the US by relinquishing the reins of power, the king said 'If he does that, he will be the greatest man in the world.'

Two germane #quotes from #GeorgeWashington’s Farewell Address to the People of the United States, 19 Sep 1796 (he warned us)…

"However [political parties] may now & then answer popular ends, they are likely in the course of time & things to become potent engines, by which cunning, ambitious, & unprincipled men will be enabled to subvert the power of the people & to usurp for themselves the reins of government, destroying afterwards the very engines which have lifted them to unjust dominion."

Genetic analysis has shed light on a long-standing mystery surrounding the fates of President George Washington’s younger brother Samuel and his kin. Two of Samuel’s descendants and their mother were recently identified from skeletal remains found in unmarked burials dating back to the 1880s, CNN Reports:

QueertyIs this “America’s Founding Daddy”? Meet George Washington’s forgotten gay general / Queerty TVIn their new graphic novel, ’Washington’s Gay General,’ author Josh Trujillo and illustrator Levi Hastings are bringing us the story of a largely forgotten, yet hugely important, figure of queer history: Baron von Steuben. A Prussian immigrant, von Steuben served as the first Inspector General in the Continental Army. Along with his many achievements as a key figure in the American revolution—he trained troops and created an organizational framework that is still in use today—von Steuben is described as a larger-than-life, dramatic, flamboyant character, with documented gay relationships and a history that makes for a page-turning wild ride. We spoke with Trujillo and Hastings about their collaborative process, who von Steuben was, what his life might have looked like if he were around today, and what it means to tell the story of a queer figure from a time when he didn’t have the language for identity that we do now. ’Washington’s Gay General’ is available now. @rbreich

I too think he wants to run it into the ground like the men and women* who owned #enslavedpeople

*Martha Washington had a large number and when #georgewashington died, she refused to set his free, she did not enforce his request

Speaking of NOT enforcing the law or bending the law, in 1808 it was illegal to bring Africans against their will to the US. The owners didn't need anymore because the child born were their property too. Horrendous, right?

George Washington's Mount VernonTen Facts About Washington & SlaveryDespite having been an enslaver for 56 years, George Washington struggled with the institution of slavery and wrote of his desire to end the practice. At the end of his life, Washington made the decision to free all of the enslaved people he owned in his 1799 will.

2/23 Who is the greatest American #president? Most short lists include:

#GeorgeWashington, the visionary #RevolutionaryWar hero, #FoundingFather and 1st president. Quite the resume.

#FranklinDRoosevelt, the only four-term president and architect of the #NewDeal. No slouch either.

However, the nod usually goes to #AbrahamLincoln. After all, "he freed the slaves" and kept the Union together through #CivilWar victory.

And, he was...a #Republican!

“In 1780 Laurens was carrying the painting to the Netherlands to negotiate a $100,000 loan for the American forces when his ship, the Mercury, was captured off Newfoundland by a 28-gun frigate of the Royal Navy.” Great story about authenticating a portrait of #GeorgeWashington by #Peale. #VastEarlyAmerica nytimes.com/2023/02/19/arts/ge

@BlackAzizAnansi Your toot made me think of #GeorgeWashington and his less than honorable land grab in the 1760s. Virginia colonial veterans of the French & Indian War had been promised land grants in exchange for fighting. Washington made sure the land was remote but prime real estate. Most veterans didn't have the means or desire to move to the "wild frontier", so Washington paid them pennies for their land. He walked away with 5,000 acres. Call him a Founding Corporate Landlord. #histodons
