A Prussian immigrant, von Steuben served as the first Inspector General in the Continental Army. Along with his many achievements as a key figure in the American revolution—he trained troops and created an organizational framework that is still in use today—von Steuben is described as a larger-than-life, dramatic, flamboyant character, with documented gay relationships and a history that makes for a page-turning wild ride. Speaking of NOT enforcing the law or bending the law, in 1808 it was illegal to bring Africans against their will to the US. The owners didn't need anymore because the child born were their property too. Horrendous, right?

#GeorgeWashington, the visionary #RevolutionaryWar hero, #FoundingFather and 1st president. Quite the resume.

#FranklinDRoosevelt, the only four-term president and architect of the #NewDeal. No slouch either.

However, the nod usually goes to #AbrahamLincoln. After all, "he freed the slaves" and kept the Union together through #CivilWar victory.

And, he was...a #Republican!

@BlackAzizAnansi Your toot made me think of #GeorgeWashington and his less than honorable land grab in the 1760s. Virginia colonial veterans of the French & Indian War had been promised land grants in exchange for fighting. Washington made sure the land was remote but prime real estate. Most veterans didn't have the means or desire to move to the "wild frontier", so Washington paid them pennies for their land. He walked away with 5,000 acres. Call him a Founding Corporate Landlord. #histodons

"A few days later Washington wrote directly to Virginia Governor Botetourt voicing his concern that given the amount of land already granted, little would remain for the veterans of 1754. Having thus prepared his case, on December 15 Washington presented a formal petition on behalf of the officers and men of his old command, requesting that the 200,000 acres be set aside in several specific areas along the Ohio River. The Governor was quick in granting the request. George Washington had the responsibility of representing the entire group of veterans in surveying and claiming the land. As the plans developed the uncertainty of ever realizing a profit from property so far removed from existing settlements led many eligible ex-soldiers to sell their rights in exchange for ready cash. Frequently it was Washington himself who was the purchaser, buying the rights to a little more than 5000 acres of land. This was in addition to the 15,000 acres that had been established as the bounty for field officers, giving George Washington a total of more than 20,000 acres to be located, surveyed, and registered in the Ohio Valley."
