Mark Carney has been elected as the leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, succeeding Justin Trudeau as Prime Minister. His victory was announced at an event in Ottawa at which Trudeau referred to the "existential crisis" the country faces from Donald Trump's threats of turning Canada into the 51st state, and closed his speech with the hockey expression "elbows up." Former Prime Minister Jean Chrétien described Canada's relationship with the U.S. as "falling apart before our eyes and becoming something that is difficult to name." Here's more from @GlobalNews.

In response to Orange Stalin's 25% tariffs on Canada, Trudeau is talking up tit-for-tat tariffs on US goods crossing the border, and ramping up failed War on (Some) Drugs criminalisation;

But what he's not doing is focusing tariffs on the US corporations owned by the oligarchs who openly support Drumpf. While keeping the doors open to goods from small business, avoiding pushing them into the arms of the GoP.

Canada will not lift retaliatory tariffs on the United States if President Donald Trump leaves any on Canada, @AssociatedPress reports. "We're not interested in meeting in the middle," said finance minister Dominic LeBlanc to the CBC. In addition to tariffs, some provinces have banned the sale of U.S. liquor from stores, while Canadians have been boycotting U.S. products and stores for weeks. Foreign minister Mélanie Joly says Canada does not want to "go through this psychodrama every 30 days or so."

This time, I agree with Justin Trudeau on something. Uninviting - banning - the president of the USA from attending the G7 summit in Kananaskis in June.

He's the elected head of the government of a member state of the G7; he clearly must be allowed to attend.

But they should *totally* make him sit at the kids' table.

And necessity has made us allies.” That rang true for many decades prior to President Kennedy's time in office, & in the decades since, from the beaches of Normandy to the mountains of the Korean Peninsula, from the fields of Flanders to the streets of Kandahar, we have fought & died alongside you. During your darkest hours— during the Iranian hostage crisis, those 444 days, we worked around the clock from our embassy to get your innocent compatriots home; during the summer of 2005, when Hurricane Katrina ravaged your great city of New Orleans; or mere weeks ago when we sent water bombers to tackle the wildfires in California; during the day the world stood still, September 11, 2001, when we provided refuge to stranded passengers and planes —we were always there. Standing with you, grieving with you, the American people. Together, we've built the most successful economic, military and security partnership the world has ever seen. A relationship that has been the envy of the world. Yes, we've had our differences in the past, but we've always found a way to get past them.
