There’s something magical about winter mornings at the Iroquois Point Light. The snow crunches underfoot, the air is crisp, and the golden light stretches across the landscape, making it feel like time has paused. Now, it’s part of my collection of lighthouse prints, bringing a sense of peace and history into any home.

It’s been a while since I’ve shared a photograph, but lately, I’ve been seeking out peaceful moments wherever I can find them. This seemed like a good place to start— a quiet winter day at Iroquois Point Lighthouse in Upper Michigan, standing strong against the cold. Visit my gallery to discover more.

Zeena was unphased by the cold and the wind, and in fact seemed to revel in it! My hand was going numb from holding my phone for photos, trying to catch big waves (with little success for the effort).

Meanwhile, Zeena would have been happy to hunt for mouses in the breakwall rocks for as long as we would have let her.

Tonttu was happy enough, but more interested in when we were going to have lunch.

Windy day today. Gale and Heavy Freezing Spray warnings on the Lake!

"For the Heavy Freezing Spray
Warning, heavy freezing spray at a rate of 2 cm per hour or
greater may rapidly accumulate on vessels."

Rather than battle the wind and drifts in the wilderness, we made today our drive-to-town day for supplies and Hungry Hippie Tacos. And a stop by the Grand Marais harbor to check out the wind and the waves.

Yes, we're off on another mid-winter adventure! While it's still not as much snow up in northern Minnesota as they like, it's still plenty to ski on and MUCH better than it was this time last year.

We stopped at Two Harbors on our way north to get the huskies some lunch, and then a chance to explore the waterfront before we hit the road again.

:flan_heckk: this one is personal, so i'm actually doin the thing:

my hubby spent most of his childhood in #upperMichigan, which is the part of of the state that doesn't look like a mitten. his dad grew up there too, and his mom lived there for decades. (it's mostly descendants of finns. his dad used to do an amazing #finnish accent 🇫🇮 )

a hundred years ago, upper michigan was all mining towns. copper. pfas everywhere. hubby and both his parents were all diagnosed with various and sundry cancers at young ages, and his sister has fought endocrine disorders her whole life.

a canadian company wants to set up another copper mine about an hour from where hubby grew up. they want to ship the copper to canada, and leave the toxic waste behind in a reservoir a couple miles upstream from #lakeSuperior. the dam they're planning to build is basically made of tissue paper, and won't last more than a bad storm.

the michigan senate has blocked funding for the mine twice, but the company has until the end of this year (2025) to get approval, so they're gonna keep trying.

i think the whole thing is a terrible idea. if you also think it's a terrible idea, you can do some keyboard activism over here.
