Affectivity of ‘Pants Science': Speculative Clothing, Disco Elysium d Pattern Recognition Esko Suoranta (Tampere University) In her introduction Fashioning Character (2021), Lauren Cardon notes the significan ashion s °a site for understanding one's relationship to class, ethnicity, religion, and any other number of affiiations’ (Cardon 2021: 10). For her questons of fashion and dress reveal that ‘when we curate our style and see ourselves reflected back in a way that feels genuine, we align our public presentations with the people we feel we have become — or wish to become', and fashion thus becomes ‘a tool for performing and ultimately constructing dentity. But what of styling and identity curation with everyday garments that originate from speculative fiction, but do not primarily work in the service of cost practices such as cosplay? What kind of affectivity does such speculal - clothing offer for their wearers? This article analyses fictional clothes in the roleplaying game (RPG) Disco Elysium (2019) and William Gibson's novel Pattern Fecognition (2003). It argues that real-world clothes originating from these fictions, respectively the FALN tracksuit and the black MA-1 aviator's jacket, rely on a framework of emotional signification to stand out from the mullitudes of both contemporary fashion and sf costuming. In this way, speculative clothing forges a strong affective connection to its wearers who make up an enthusiastic and loyal consumer audience.

So, my "From Kalasatama to the Suicide Tower" talk went well and our room was nicely packed. Two things became clear. First, there is more to say about how recent Finnish SF tries to approach tensions inherent to democracy. I'll get to writing on that soon. Second, introducing Finnish SF to anglophone audiences reveals demand for translations!

Henry Fuseli’s 1781 painting, “The Nightmare”. It depicts a woman in a white gown reclining across a couch or bed. Every time I give my students the option to fulfil an assignment through some kind of non-traditional project (a fictional interview, a podcast script, a lesson plan, a blog post) they do such wonderfully wild and clever things. I just finished reading an analysis of two Emily Dickinson poems in the mode of a scene in an interrogation room between Dickinson and Death. So good.
