Swept up by all the excitement over the sudden growth of, and interest in, #Pixelfed, yesterday I opened a publicly accessible Pixelfed server, https://gr8.pics

If you are interested in a new home for posting photos, one that is decentralized and connected to all ActivityPub servers, come on over and kick the tires. It must be good if Zuckerberg is afraid of it, and blocking Pixelfed links, right?

As far as I know, Pixelfed doesn't do server relaying, so photographs and short videos come in only through follow relationships, which is why I'd like to get people to start posting photos and following people elsewhere in the Fediverse who post pictures. Currently, the local and global timelines are limited. Over time, it will become filled with photos and short videos as more people make it their photo home.

Although I haven't tried it yet, it's supposed to import your #Instagram account.

The server is less than a day old. It may have problems I haven't found out about. But, if you're in a pioneering mood and would like a decentralized home for your photos and short videos, well, maybe worth checking this out. The server is small, but seems to be handling what there is effortlessly, but I'll scale it up if I see stress.

Dear newcomers, if you plan to bulk-upload years worth of #Instagram or #Flickr photos, please consider tossing a coin to your admin if you can.

The server you're on is most likely run by a private individual, and its storage space for media files is not endless. Your donation helps your admin pay hosting costs and upgrade the server if needed.

So, seems threads posts are lagging their ability to be available in the fediverse, past the normal 15 minutes. Could be just a temporary thing for @mosseri & @zuck to see if we care (we do), but clarifies that all of meta is unreliable now.

Come on now, we know meta is degrading, but I hate it.

Leave meta's platforms as much as you can since no matter what we do, they'll degrade further. Your connections & businesses cannot rely on meta any longer.

To put this in the most stark terms possible: we cannot stand in a room owned by someone with bad intentions, with the air itself controlled by them, and hope to win a fight against them. Staying in the room with our communities is not a solve. We will suffocate.

I like the fact that Tumblr allows multiple different blogs under one user.

I've now set up a replacement Tumblr page for my Marine Mammal News Facebook Page.

Shame to lose the followers I've gained over the years, but given how flooded the Facebook home feed is with unwanted crap, I doubt many people see my posts these days.

My main (fuzzy) indicator for mastodon growth (and by implication the exodus on other platforms) are the usercounts of some quality, high reach #news organisations.

One of those that I follow is @tagesschau (german language)
They are adding over a hundred daily users atm, cruising towards 60.000 followers now.

A good sign. A month ago they were only adding some 10 a day.

To avoid impersonation if the account goes dormant (gets deleted), I’ve been scheduling single posts to post on my old twitter once a week.

They invite people to join me on other platforms. I’ve basically deleted all other posts I made on twitter since 2008.

Today, I changed messages going forward to no longer direct people to meta platforms, and instead just to these:
