"In addition to information about global temperatures on land and in the oceans, the briefings include seasonal weather forecasts for the US and information on droughts.

In past briefings, researchers have openly discussed the role of human-caused climate change in driving record-high temperatures. But during last month’s call #NOAA researchers avoided making any mention of #ClimateChange when discussing record-high global temperatures in January."

New Scientist · NOAA cancels monthly climate and weather update callsBy James Dinneen

"Mass layoffs with the threat of future reductions has made the future of #NOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, uncertain. From impacts to the National Weather Service and disruptions to its data which acts as the “invisible backbone” of almost all weather forecasts, recent cuts to NOAA are likely to cause harm to public safety, economic well-being, and future climate research."

Update. It's not enough for #Trump to …

* nominate #climate denialists to run key agencies like the #EPA and #NOAA
* remove climate-related words from govt web sites
* take down whole climate science sites and datasets
* defund climate research and researchers
* layoff scientists and civil servants with climate expertise
* repeal climate regulations
* eliminate 10 regional EPA offices, including the one in DC
* and plan to replace consensus climate findings with ideological cherrypicking as the foundation for policymaking …

… now his #FBI is freezing the assets of nonprofits like Habitat for Humanity, which have received EPA grants, alleging that they might be guilty of “possible criminal violations” including “conspiracy to defraud the United States.”

"#NOAA is now preparing to lose more than 1,000 additional workers in a second round of firings. The agency could ultimately lose about 20% of its staff.

Swain told CBS News he believes the situation could quickly devolve into a public safety threat."

cbsnews.com/news/noaa-national

The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is laying off over 1,000 more employees.

@USAToday reports: "The agency, which includes the National Weather Service, forecasts weather, monitors oceanic and atmospheric conditions and conducts deep-sea exploration, among other responsibilities."

Hurricane #Elon: #DOGE cuts could cause meteorologists to miss next ‘nightmare’ storm
Trump chaotic approach to so-called efficiency in federal workforce has wreaked havoc upon civil service, including at #NWS & #NOAA
All signs point to dismemberment of national meteorological and hydrological service that had been envy of world. Whether it is by hitting it with sledgehammer or delivering death by a thousand cuts, NOAA and NWS staff are already spread thin and demoralized

Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists · Hurricane Elon: DOGE cuts could cause meteorologists to miss the next ‘nightmare’ stormBalloon-launch gaps are only one example of critical meteorological information that is on track to go missing in 2025.

I have released episode 5 of the Raised Beaches Podcast, a podcast about paleoclimate, Earth science and global change! This episode's deep dive is on the greenhouse effect. Get it in the following link or wherever you get your podcasts.

In the intro, I talk about going to watch Sakurajima Volcano erupt, an earthquake I felt in January, my efforts to download data from NOAA and how US government agencies are being shut down, and a commentary on DEI.

I discuss in the deep dive how the greenhouse effect works, and why greenhouse gases are needed to keep the planet inhabitable. In the second part I discuss the history of the discovery of the greenhouse effect and how it got its name, and the greenhouse effect on Venus and Mars.

Finally, I discuss in the papers section a recent paper I am coauthor on, led by Alessio Rovere, about determining past sea level position from a beach ridge in Argentina. I discuss 4 other papers.

"Their work informs farmers when to plant and harvest. Their work determines when to sound tornado alarms and when to evacuate from the path of a hurricane. That all adds up to more than 3 billion weather forecasts a year. Now, as the tornado season starts and the hurricane season near, none of that seems to matter to the ideologues in charge. But it certainly should."

"The National Weather Service is a government success story. … For about $4 a year, we get the best scientists in the world watching a staggering number of weather events each year. Tens of thousands of thunderstorms, 5,000 floods, 1,300 tornadoes, hurricanes, droughts and an increasing number of wildfires. Their work makes it safe to fly."

To US scientists:

Data preservation by producing copies in enough places to make eradication impossible is good.

But old data is... old. How to continue data series?

Key: operational system software, which embodies irreplaceable institutional wisdom, experience and memory. Largely invisible-- mandatory for success.

I am thinking of a particular #NOAA program here. There is some promise for portability. But without supporting software portage is impossible.

Grab backups on the way out.

“Effective immediately, and until further notice, the National Weather Service (NWS) is temporarily suspending some weather balloon launches in Albany, New York, and Gray, Maine, due to a lack of Weather Forecast Office (WFO) staffing. Offices will perform twice daily launches when staffing permits.”

Less data for the weather model runs.
