I was attempting to get a close-up of the underside of a mushroom and almost bumped smack dab into this poor fellow who was just trying to hide from the rain 
surprisingly he didn't mov too much (just tilted his head a bit) even as I was that close, I appreciate his patience with me as I briefly got up in his space.
I've done a fair bit of walling in the N Pennines now and this is the only newt I've come across so far. No toads either. Despite often working near water.
Back in Northumberland toads were regularly dug up and even Great Crested Newts were seen. (I abandoned work where the latter were found). This one was carefully put into the bottom of the adjacent newly rebuilt wall. #Wildlife #Newt

Fun newt fact, or rather "newt" fact:
"A newt" used to be "an ewte", but the "n" jumped across thanks to rebracketing (misdivision, reanalysis, etc.)*
The word's Old English etymon, "eft", now refers more narrowly to the juvenile terrestrial stage of certain newts.

Great Crested Newts this morning. This amphibian is a protected species here in the UK that returns to breed in the same ponds every year. I have a survey licence for these (before anyone asks!). In #Bath #Somerset #UK.
