03-02-2024 - #OlympiaWA - Poor People's Campaign
Starting at Sylvester Park and marching to the Capitol steps, a few hundred people gathered today for the Poor People's Campaign. Capitol Way S. from at least Legion Way SE to 14th Ave SE was closed, with several side streets also closed in between. Many people carried black and yellow signs branded as PoorPeoplesCampaign.org. Calling for "a national call for moral revival" multiple Pacific Northwest faith and First Nation leaders spoke about inequalities on financial, housing and healthcare topics.
"We're not simply here to tear up anything, see there's not one window broken, somebody say Amen, we're not here to just disrupt and upset things, when we come, we demand, we bring about liberation for those who are most vulnerable among us, we are here knowing that we have an interconnectedness of all of our injustice, and simply because we are here talking about the poor, we are connected to people all over the world, those are who are afraid, those who are dying by genocide, those who are all over this world, we stand together as a people saying that enough is enough" - "We must wake the sleeping giant, there's no more time for us to be quiet, We must wake the sleeping giant, so that we can become a country that is healed and unified, and so we're not stuck looking at what color our body is, or what color our shoe is, but that we are all one people, not left or right, but right or wrong"
#FreePalestine supporters were also gathered on the Capitol steps, and with a couple planned speakers left, they began yelling "Free Palestine!" loudly over the top of a person speaking, causing a disruption. After a small commotion with DES and WSP officers approaching, and multiple discussions on the side with organizers, it was decided Palestine supporters would be able to speak, which they did, while making a point to represent MLK numerous times with their speech.
