#Postdocs and #PhD students hit hard by Trump’s crackdown on #science, anxiety and fear grip early-career researchers.
Month of repeated threats to #US science funding, many early-career researchers are fearing for their careers. #Scientists especially vulnerable: graduate students, postdocs and scientists just starting their own labs are the researchers most likely to be living pay cheque to pay cheque, most reliant on federal grants for their income.

More than 40 percent of #postdocs leave academia. Those who landed a coveted faculty position were more likely to have had a highly cited paper, changed their research topic between their #PhD and postdoc, or moved abroad after receiving their doctorate. nature.com/articles/d41586-025 @nature.com

okay, asking fedi for academic advice~ I'm probs overthinking this, but thought I'd ask anyway: Is it a red flag if I say sorry for slow research progress due to visa stuff?

so context: I've was hired as a postdoc back in Sept, but my contract is stated to start only once my visa is approved, and due to messups by the uni, this got delayed by 2 months. In the meanwhile I've been paid and working under my phd advisor, while working on my research with my postdoc advisor in my free time

anyway, as my PhD advisor is the one who's paying me, his research takes priority, and my updates to my postdoc advisor over the months while waiting haven't been as consistent as I have liked

I haven't received any complaints or anything from them, but from what I understand, hiring a postdoc as a junior faculty has some risks, because you're also busy with reaching tenure and stuff and you don't want to dedicate too much time to managing a postdoc etc. so being aware of that I feel like pressure to demonstrate that hiring me was a good decision and like that I won't let them down?

I sent my postdoc advisor a message saying that the visa stuff was done, and sorry for the slow progress and that I will be sure to pick up the pace once I've moved, but didn't get a response so now I'm overthinking it --- like is saying this suggesting that I'll need a level of micromanaging that is too much? or like does it imply that I view them as too performance oriented? or...

I just read through my latest #introduction and it’s so outdated 👀

Hello friends 👋🐘

My name is Bibi and I am a final-year #PhD student in #astronomy and #astrophysics at Lund University in Sweden.

I observe #exoplanets with big #telescopes to study their atmospheric composition ✨🪐🔭

I recently spent a year in #Chile at #ESO, and now I am writing up my #thesis, and I am applying for #postdocs 🪐

I am the first in my family to go to uni, so you’ll definitely hear me talk about that ☺️ #scicomm

#WissZeitVG #ichbinhanna #ichbinReyan #ichbinTina

#NIH has a request for information out on a set of policies for #postdoc researchers that include limiting NIH support to 5 years.

Im almost 2 years into a project where I have almost finished rearchitecting the de facto standard for my field from the ground up, in doing so making heavy contribution to surrounding projects rather than wandering off on my own - which would have certainly yielded a paper in a high impact journal sooner, but been worse for open source and the tooling landscape. If I have to be out in 5 years then that would be how I had to work if I wanted to still be in academic research.

That project is about shifting the backbone of the tooling ecosystem for research from start to finish, not just for my field and this format, but very generalizably. Im in a lab and collaborating with ppl who make a big chunk of the open source hardware in our field, and we're also rebuilding the acquisition software system to plug directly into extensible vernacular schemas that can be massively interoperable. Rearchitecting data standards is also an ethical project, to enable a new kind of p2p system that stands a plausible chance of being an alternative to the inevitable future of the NIH giving 1/3 of its budget to Amazon and google for cloud hosting. That work is continuous with what we're doing over here on neuromatchstodon, bc my work is putting these data formats directly into linked data standards - in a way that actually works - so we can build distributed systems of communication to be able to share work and assign credit across the lifespan of an experiment, a protocol-based alternative to the journal system.

None of that work fits into a system of support where in 5 years I need to have enough prestige pubs to land a faculty position. That work really can only be done by postdocs and staff scientists. So that kind of integrative work addressing foundational problems in research would simply become impossible, rather than heavily disincentivized. hit up the rfi

I'm going to have TWO full-time one-year #postdocs available from 1 April: one for a historian with knowledge of #medieval Latin #palaeography, one for a computer scientist/#programmer (or someone else with a proven ability to code software). The job descriptions will be out in January, but please re-post this and forward it on to people you think may be interested/qualified. I'm happy to answer questions. @medievodons @histodons

Finally got round to reading the Nature article on #postdocs in their 30s. I'm a bit disappointed: it reads as if being able to buy a house or starting a family is the main problem. While those are obviously important issues, this downplays the general mental/emotional burden of instability, esp when linked to relocating (it's exhausting to re-establish yourself, finding new friends etc) & also how disruptive it is for #sciencecareers to start new projects in a new place repeatedly... #academia

Falling behind: #postdocs in their thirties tire of putting life on hold.

Temporary contracts, low salaries and cost-of-living hikes force many researchers to put off parenthood and other big decisions.

#Academia is broken and the only ways to fix it are funding models that reduce competirion and encourage collaboration as well focusing on long-term contracts and tenure jobs rather than short-term financial pressures.

Any cell biologists out there in the #ScienceMastodon universe?

Highly recommend taking a look at this one day meeting in the UK in #Bristol - mellorlab.wordpress.com/actin-

The #Actin meeting aims to "bring together the UK actin community for a day of informal talks and discussion."

There are short talks - mostly from #Postdocs and #PhD students, there's a poster session at lunch and prizes, too.

It's a friendly and inclusive conference and great for networking - check it out!
