Went for a walk down the road this morning and found a male Satin Bowerbird, and a group of predictably raucous Rainbow Lorikeets.

A dark blue bird with a purple eye and ivory beak as seen from below, perched in a brightly lit tree. It has a very short tail compared with its body size.

Two Rainbow Lorikeets in a melaleuca tree. One is gripping the branch it is sitting on with its beak, the other is keeping an eye on me.

They are brightly coloured small parrots with red beaks, blue heads, green wings, red and orange chests, blue bellies and green and yellow rumps. The upper side of the tail feathers are mostly green, with the underside being mostly yellow.

Some Rainbow Lorikeets I met yesterday as they fed on the figs from a Moreton Bay Fig Tree.

A small parrot with red beak, blue head, red eye, red and yellow throat, blue belly and green wings, perched on a small branch, facing left, and looking at the camera.

Its green back and wings are pretty much the same colour as the leaves, while its blue head and belly and yellow/orange/red throat/chest stand out in stark contrast.

Other open woodland birds spotted this morning included this pair of Rufous Whistlers, a Common Bronzewing (type of native Dove), and of course, Rainbow Lorikeets.

Male Rufous Whistler on a dead branch. He is a darker brown/grey on top, with a black band across his chest below his white throat. His belly is a pronounced rufous orange.

While looking for Swift Parrots at Picnic Point, Toowoomba (this was a side quest, since I'm unlikely to top my Swift Parrot shot from Bruny Island), we came across a pair of Rainbow Lorikeets checking out this tree hollow.

Many Australian birds and animals use hollows for nesting, which is why old-growth forests are so important. A good hollow can take many decades to form.

Also spotted on campus this morning, the bully of the parrot world, a Rainbow Lorikeet;
a Buff-banded Rail stalking through the undergrowth, and a Hardhead shaking a tailfeather.

I had to wander over the river to one of our remote sites this morning, and spotted some Rainbow Lorikeets on the way.

A brightly coloured parrot stares directly at the camera while perched on a grevillea bush.

The parrot has a red beak, blue head, green wings, orange and red chest and grey legs.

One sits atop the branch, and the other, facing it, on the end of the branch, just outside the opening of the hollow. It has its wings open, showing the red, yellow and charcoal colouring underneath.
The wing flapping is part of a communication routine, accompanied by loud chirps and squeals.

On the driveway this morning, some very noisy Rainbow Lorikeets.
It seems the one on the left has a broken beak, but it didn't seem to be impeding its feeding.
