I have a backup script which uses the following command to create a tar file compressed with
tar --create --verbose --file="backup.tar.xz" ${HOME}
It works, but is very slow. Can anyone suggest ways to speed it up? Is it usually quicker to create a tar file and then compress it, rather than doing both at once? Is there a faster compression algorithm? (speed > space in this case)

#dar 5/ Many backup tools say they can do incremental backups - backing up just the files that have changed. GNU #tar is one of them. When #dar makes an incremental, it compares the prior content (from the archive or isolated catalog) to the current content, and emits an archive that represents the diff - even deleting files that were removed.

You probably know #tar. A nice feature of #tar is that it can be streamed; you can pipe it to ssh to create or extract an archive, pipe it through compressors and encryptors and so forth.
This is also its weakness. If you want just one file or directory from a tar file, you have to decompress/decrypt and read the whole thing. Even if you just want a LIST of it, you have to read the whole thing. Very inefficient.
