Starting July 26th, 2020 (the 30th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act), UC Access Now and allies started sending emails to the Governor, the UC Board of Regents, and every UC chancellor to read and act on the UC Access Now Demandifesto.

Our Governor mentions his dyslexia when it's convenient for him, but he never bothered answering the hundreds of people who wrote him about the systemic ableism within UC.

""Gov. Gavin Newsom recently sent burner phones to major California business leaders with his number preprogrammed — paid for by his nonprofit, allowing him to communicate with executives without having to disclose the content publicly.""

Ah. That's why.

CalMatters · California politicians try to shield business from the publicTransparency alert: While Californians confront officials at town halls, politicians are pushing bills to shield themselves from public view.

Inaccessible cycling racks were the last straw that catalyzed the formation of UC Access Now.

It was very difficult getting non-disabled anti-ableists to be active.

These cycle racks were installed without consultation with us, but in response to our hard-fought campaign.

We told abled cyclists all along that accessible racks benefit you too! Most rack designs & installations throughout UC do not take upright bikes with trailers, bakfiets, cargo bikes, trikes, etc into consideration at all.

And this is an upright bike towing a trailer parked at the racks installed as a result of our activism. #UCAccessNow #CycleParkingAudit #Infrastructure #Ableism @fedibikes @disability

For things that affect donors or that affect people who get politically active and get the governor to crack down on UC Admins, they'll resist the coupsters.

For anyone else, UC admins will not resist. They're utter cravens.

We've already seen this in their response to Student Spring last year.

Disability and Accommodation Use in US Bachelor of Science in Nursing Programs - JAMA Network

"Medical associations’ commitment to advancing disability-inclusive practices has led to data collection on, and a significant increase in representation of, medical students with disabilities.1,2 However, information on disability representation and accommodation use in US nursing programs remains scarce. The lack of data collection on this population impedes the ability to identify barriers, benchmark, and measure progress. To address this gap, we quantified disabilities and types of accommodations used among traditional prelicensure nursing students in US Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree programs."

"Compliance" is what you do when a law is passed and you are just trying to do the bare minimum to comply with the law.

This is the system UC has where disabled people have to go to separate offices (a different one for employees than students, for instance) to fight for the bare minimum in accessibility.

You don't have to worry as much about someone pressuring you to scrub all references to accessibility if you simply make the highest common denominator of accessibility be the default.

You can still offer accessibility - offer it to everyone instead of rationing it. Design your courses, your workplace to be ACCESSIBLE and inclusive as you can. #UCAccessNow

The rationing and policing system Is about keeping inaccessibility the norm and making it as hard as possible for disabled people to obtain an accessible and welcoming education.

It also happens to misuse the tax $ and tuition of disabled people to pay the mostly abled disability cops they hire to do this.

Nothing in the requirements about expertise in accessibility nor any lived experience of being disabled.

Everyone should contemplate the amount of money, administrative and legal power that UC puts into preventing public education and resources from being accessible and inclusive to disabled people...

...and then contemplate what they must reward given that several of the young tech folks who were henchtraitors to Musk at the US Office of Personnel Management and the US Treasury have degrees from UC Berkeley and UC Davis.

Thinking today about the at least two lawsuits against the encampment protests during Student Spring pressed against the UC Regents on the basis of the Americans with Disabilities Act, which the plaintiffs were suddenly concerned about. A Federalist Society judge granted & UC responded to it by banning tents on campus at all, installing increased surveillance and other measures clamping down on 1st Amendment rights.

The same UC Regents that had no official response for the Demandifesto.

Also willing to bet the plaintiffs' concern for disabled ppl stopped the day they won in court.

The right wing doesn't care about disabled people, nor about hypocrisy. They just care about winning and control. #UCAccessNow #Ableism

Re last boost: It was a given that today's GOP would not support accessibility, even though ADA was passed with bipartisan work during the Bush (the elder) Administration. The current boughten members of SCOTUS would undermine disability law if cases were brought to them so a lot of disabled people have chosen to settle or not press suit because they didn't want to trigger a weakening of these laws on the books.

However, law and its enforcement is about compulsion. We should not need to be compelled to be accessible.

UC Access Now has always pointed out how possible it is to change culture by choosing to be accessible! What's in your control, make accessible! Create an accessibility culture as part of resistance! #Accessibility #UCAccessNow #a11y

So frustrating. At least 3 works that appear on Google Scholar cite the UC Access Now Demandifesto (and the one in my pinned tweet SHOULD have cited it), but there's no way for me to use the Demandifesto as a link for my own Google Scholar Profile.

I've tried uploading it to Hcommons in addition to Internet Archive, but the platform has been so error-ridden that I still cannot publish it there. (I am told Google Scholar will pick up Hcommons.) #UCAccessNow #Attribution
