TIL: an exhausted #cmos #battery can cause #Linux to behave strangely after a hard #shutdown (caused by a #UPS being incorrectly turned off) - it uses the BIOS time to check the filesystem block timestamps, and as it had gone back to 2012 the OS thinks the filesystem time is in the future! (At least the hard drive on this server isn't on the way out yet which is what I had feared, but this required an emergency visit to the office as it is the main #VOIP #PBX) #sysadmin

I think it's time for a re-introduction!

Hello fediverse! I am an admin for Veganism.Social, VoIP engineer, sim-racer with @ethixracing, gamer, foodie, and long-time ethical vegan. I'm originally from South Florida, but now living in the Orlando area as of 2020. I'm usually not a very social person, but I'm trying to change that! I want to make a difference in the world, and one person cannot do that alone, so connecting with others is essential.

My political and ethical views are all centered around equality, compassion, and environmental protection. I am anti-capitalist, but I also understand that it's impossible in the current state of society to avoid participating in it. So I try to make the best decisions I can with the options given to me in order to minimize the harm it causes.

Humans and animals all over the world are facing troubling times, and thinking about it has taken a massive toll on my mental health. Now, I am trying to focus my efforts on things that I can change, rather than spreading myself too thin and not helping at all. This doesn't mean I'm ignoring all of the other suffering, but simply trying to prioritize based on what is within my reach.

Thank you for taking the time to read, and if you feel like we have something in common, give a follow! I look forward to meeting like-minded individuals and organizations that seek to make the world a better place!

#Digital Voice switchover cut off 95-year-old's landline

My 95-year-old friend is in distress. His #landline has stopped working & he’s told by his provider #EE that he may need to accept a new phone number to get his service back

He lives alone & relies on his phone for human contact

It will be a challenge for him to let people know his new number and he risks being cut off from #medical #communications

The Guardian · Digital Voice switchover cut off my 95-year-old friend’s landlineBy Anna Tims

I am not a "phone person". But my home and business will need phones (and I think we'd like them to be separate).

OTOH, I'm about to ditch my phone company, which is a regional monopoly, so no more land line.

I think the obvious thing is to subscribe to a VOIP service to replace it -- so phone would go over the broadband internet.

I am a babe in these woods.

What should I beware of? Costs? Hidden costs? Security and privacy concerns?

@fosdem #FOSDEM ask: If you have any #Cisco #SPA500 series #VoIP phones you don't need any more or might be cycling out of use over the year, please get in contact with us / me.

We have had fixed phones at a few key locations this past weekend and want to expand the use of static phones. So an upper bound of maybe 50-60 phones would be very useful to us accounting for all devrooms and for a few spares.

Edit: Retoots explicitly appreciated.

[#TLDR: JUST TELL ME IF YOUR TABLET CAN DO #CALLS!]

#DearVendors of #Android-#Tablets:

Off all the #Functions you can put into a #Specifications Sheet of your Devices there's one you should ALWAYS answer clearly on your #Website:

DOES YOUR TABLET [with #4G / #5G / …) SUPPORT MAKE PHONE CALLS?

Like: IS IT TOO MUCH TO ASK TO HAVE THAT INFO IN THE SPECSHEETS?

You're obviously able to list all the #Codecs natively supported and the user-available storage as well as supported Frequency Bands, WWAN modes, WiFi channel width and the Display Glass vs. Panel dimensions including DPI of the latter and whether or not it has a hall effect sensor to detect your overpriced 1st party tablet covers!

Now some folks may ask: "WHY does this matter?" or outright dismiss this as a problem.

Listen:
Not everyone is able or willing to carry two devices when 1 SHOULD BE ENOUGH and also some places (i.e. #Turkey) have #ImportRestrictions re: #MobileDevices, so having more than 1 #IMEI is already a "NOPE!" by the authorities.

  • Also this isn't something one can "fix" post-purchase like installing #VLC to decode some obscure file format in Software: Either the #Baseband and #ROM support #PhoneCalls or they don't!

So why do NONE of the #Tablet manufacturers allow to #search or #filter for that???

NO, instead one has to download an obscenely huge #PDF just to then read on page 34 that for any "#telephony" function you NEED YET ANOTHER DEVICE FROM THE SAME MANUFACTURER AND HAVE TO SIGNUP WITH AN ACCOUNT and even that level of #abuse WON'T GUARANTEE THAT IT WORKS...

  • I mean, come on, this ain't some obscure functionality like #OMAPI to do some "evil sourcery" like managing an #eSIM that is in a #SIM-Card form factor!

Pretty shure A LOT of other folks have the same question and ain't willing to get yet another device & #SIM just to recieve the occasional call because #TechIlliterates can't be assed to send an #eMail or learn #XMPP+#OMEMO to message one...

  • Obviously they same manufacturers are able and willing to specify f-stops of the built-in cameras and list EVERY SINGLE #WEARABLE they made and certify as 'compatible' with, as if anyone is gonna take their non-#waterproof #Tablet for a marathon or god forbid triathlon...

A day of #telephones - reconfigured #FreePBX #trunks that link on-premises #PBX with #cloud PBX to use #PJSIP rather than chan_sip - hopefully they will stay registered more reliably, repaired handset of desktop #VOIP phone with broken RJ9 socket using another harvested from defective analogue set (not prettiest repair, and I had to check the wiring colours as they are *different* between original and new socket), but it works #Repair #Maintenance #Telecoms

Do you know anyone who could sell or donate used Grandstream Network GXP 1625 #VoIP phones?

Our last crowdfunding for #Ukraine military communications was a huge success - I’m not posting details because I was not authorised by the donors, but several #HamRadio folks here on Fediverse sent very much needed low-resistance cable and connectors.

They arrived to Lviv early this week and are now being sent all around the front line to improve communications in the local command & control centers. Huge thank you to everyone who sent these - I’ve sent “thank you” photos from 128. Brigade individually.

As the guys explained, everyone happily donates for FPV drones and military equipment “but you can’t make an exciting video with 100 m of RG-58 cable”… and he’s got a point here😂 Except no FPV drones will ever fly without these boring cables, connectors, switches, repeaters etc.
