Snow, Mountain, Glacier

Snæfellsjökull, a 700,000-year-old glacier-capped stratovolcano in western #Iceland.

The most recent eruption occurred around 1,800 years ago, but the volcano is still considered active, with the potential for future eruptions.

Sadly, according to glaciologists, the glacier is predicted to disappear by 2100.

The name Snæfellsjökull¹ literally means "Snow mountain glacier"

The Endless Black Beach

What looks like one huge strand disappearing to the horizon is actually a sequence of four neighbouring beaches. In the hazy distance is Eyjafjallajökull volcano, there's a rainbow near the centre top of the photo as well as people standing on the clifftop at the right.

This shot was taken from Dyrhólæy¹ lighthouse in southern #Iceland.

White Water

Mid-March, and the flow of Seljalandsfoss¹ in southern #Iceland is quite low compared to summer.

The cold and snow have kept most tourists away, but not us, and we have the place almost to ourselves. That small figure on the right is me.Taking photos, as usual, and wearing about eight layers of clothing!

A slice of rainbow and some of the ice in #Iceland.

"To smooth the ice, or add another hue
Unto the rainbow, or with taper-light
To seek the beauteous eye of heaven to garnish,
Is wasteful and ridiculous excess."

Frozen Gold

Mid-March, Gullfoss, #Iceland.

The Hvítá¹ river flows south, but above the falls it turns to the west and down into a three-step "staircase".
Then, abruptly, it plunges in two stages (11m/36ft, and 21m/69ft) into a crevice 32m/105ft deep. The crevice is about 20m (66ft) wide and 2.5km (1.6mi) long.
The amount of water running down the waterfall is ≈ 80 m³ (2,800 ft³) per second in the winter.

Mid-November, and a beautiful day for admiring the mountains. The light wind is ruffling the surface of the water and making a distorted mirror for the honey-coloured peaks.

Beyond is Norðlingalægðarjökull¹, one of the glaciers calving into Jökulsárlón².

Fellsfjall (665 m/2182 ft) in Suðursveit, Hornafjörður, south-eastern #Iceland.
