My night flight was a success. Launched shortly after sunset and flew to Wausau (KAUW) and past the ski hills. Then a jaunt back with a 30 knot tailwind making the return trip a lot faster.
Just experienced my first real-life engine failure in #GeneralAviation!
Luckily, as pilots always say: "checklists save lives", which is why we were able to detect and identify the issue *before* take off.
During run-up, when I tested the first magneto, the RPMs immediately dropped 200 and then kept falling until the engine started choking. I turned it back on before it died completely. We tried again to reproduce the result and then called ground control for a return to the ramp.
I took my mother down to Bessie's Diner in Janesville, WI (KJVL) for a birthday brunch. It has been snowing and otherwise bad weather here for a while so it was nice to fly again. (Check out those roads across the lake on the ice).
Sorry everyone (maybe 1 of you) that was waiting for my Tuesday build night post. Here it is, still working on the tail and riveting the skins on the tail cone. Now we're on to the curved side parts and the directions are pretty vague about the fitment.
I went for a really nice flight on Sunday with my kid (3). He really liked the part where I pushed the nose over and picked him up off the seat. The air was smooth and the winds were light. A great day for flying.
After a trying day at work trying to stop me, I actually did some work on my plane. Nothing super complex but work that has to be done.
I'm working on the elevators (control your pitch) and I have my replacement punched spars so the laser cut parts. They look similar (good)
Once I confirmed I had the parts I peeled the coating off and set to work cleaning up the spars for the rough form they are in.

It was Friday, 3:00pm, I stepped outside because it looked nice and I needed to check the mail. The winds were light, the skies were clear, and I just couldn't tolerate going back in my basement to work. So I took the rest of the day off and went flying.

After a lot of digging and based on the information in the original flight manual, I think I've figured out what 55J's original paint scheme (livery) was. Seeing it now, if I do end up getting her repainted in the future, I think I want to restore her to this.
