#lock

On the UK's canals, locks allow boats to go uphill or downhill, in stepped chambers that raise or lower the water, so the boat can move on. As a lock chamber fills, every meter of water weighs about 40,000 kilos. The lock's gates must hold in that water.

An average 6½-foot gate weighs 950 kilos, or 2,000 pounds. Each one is handmade of solid wood, reinforced with steel plates, straps, and bolts.

Uphill, #boating alone:
1. Approach the #lock, tie up the boat.
2. Drain the lock: open lower paddles.
3. Once empty: close lower #paddles.
4. Open the lower gate.
5. Untie the #boat, enter the lock.
6. Climb the ladder, bring the #midline.
7. Close the lower #gate.
8. Fill the lock: open upper paddles.
9. Use the midline to control the boat.
10. Once full: close the upper paddles.
11. Open the top gate.
12. Exit the lock and tie up.
13. Close the top gate.
14. Untie the boat and keep #boating.

When there's a flight of locks, sometimes you end up waiting in one lock for a boat that's coming from the next lock. Both crews leave the lock gate open so we can pass each other between locks and directly enter the next lock.

Today, the draining water from the lock above was overfilling the pound and lock I was waiting in. Just look at the water level … nearly overflowing.
