#minirack stage 1 is complete - I got the frame built.

I was hoping not to have to 3D print spacers for the structure but the vertical beams were slightly too short.

The goal behind this is to get all my thrift-store networking tech organised alongside the server. Next step is lasercutting the face plates, brackets, and cable management solutions.

My home network needs to get a bit more complicated and I'm thinking about making a combined server/rack thing out of 2020 extrusion. Not too worried about keeping to standards since I'd be printing/lasercutting plates etc. Any thoughts?

Just waiting on a patch panel and some more #Ethernet cables and then my homelab can be restarted!

A picture of an 8U mini rack. One view is taken up with a Netgate firewall. A space is left to install a keystone patch panel. When you is taken up by one 5 port switch. 2U is taken up by a panel that can accommodate up to 8 Raspberry Pis, only two are currently installed. Blanking panels make up the next 2U of space, with 1U missing due to not having enough screws. A red cable can be seen coming out of the firewall and into the switch this is temporary until the Keystone panel is installed. Two more ethernet cables can be seen coming out of the switch into the raspberry pis

A rear view of the mini rack, the same equipment from the rear can be seen as installed on the front (refer to other image) at the bottom a rack mounted extension lead is installed with two plugs out of three attached. To the right hand side of the plug is a red switch can be seen, it is currently turned off

While looking for new hardware for our home server (a 19'' mini rack server is very tempting...), I just came across project #minirack

10" rack server builds using a mix of off-the-shelf commercial and #diy #3dprinted mounts, panels, frontplates etc.

Looks interesting (and the mini racks are also rather cute).
Maybe interesting to some of you.

Been reading through @geerlingguy github for the mini rack (https://github.com/geerlingguy/mini-rack/).

One of the discussions includes some chat about cutting down 42U 19" rails to make multiple 10" mini racks.

But now all I can think of is making a 42U 10" BIG "Mini" Rack.

@geerlingguy sometimes forks are just too good opnsense vs pfsense is a good example, rsj should start wearing a shirt that says lucky. pls do followup on making minirack for specific use cases and matched up with the odd hw/sw req - add in a couple usb - one for dx and another for iso/backups #minirack blends #ci/cd #open source hw #object orientated #partimage #dd piped through gz

I must admit that I love the #MiniRack project of @geerlingguy : (more) affordable and (especially) portable #rack builds for #network, #homelab and whatever you think of … in 10 inches wide
