For #ValentinesDay, I'll be posting #HistoricalHearts. Let's start with this life-size papier-mâché heart by the French anatomist Louis Thomas Jérôme Auzoux from the 19th century. Photo: Alex Peck.
“Wound Man” is an illustration which first appeared in European surgical texts during the Middle Ages. It laid out schematically the various wounds a person might suffer in battle or in accidents, with accompanying text stating treatments. Tag yourself as a wound.
Jetzt #OpenAccess! Ich freue mich sehr, dass mein Buch zu #DigitalHistory, #Historiografie mit #Hypertext ab heute frei zugänglich ist.
Herzlichen Dank für die wunderbare Unterstützung, @transcriptweb

Victorian medicine chest, which contains medications for pain relief, such as opium. It also includes a set of scales, weights, a pill tile, and a spatula. It was probably used in the home or by an apothecary.

Three glass eyes with portable velvet carrying case and mirror, c.1870. These were likely meant to be carried by an ocularist – someone who specialized in making and fitting prosthetic eyes – to assist them in making the best possible match to the patient’s remaining eye.
This wax model of a human head from the 19th century shows the internal structure of the brain, complete with its protective covering, the meninges, the eye, cheek, neck and jaw. Wax models were used for teaching anatomy to medical students or as part of popular anatomy shows.
Dental Phantom, c.1898. Or, what it feels like to be on Twitter (X) these days.
The dental phantom was first created by the Glaswegian dentist Eduard Oswald Fergus a few years earlier as a tool for students to practice their craft before working on human subjects.
This is statue of Saint Bartholomew, an early Christian martyr who was allegedly skinned alive. Notice: that's not a robe that he’s holding. It's his dissected skin. This stunning statute is by the Italian sculptor Marco d’Agrate, c.1562.
Maidin mhaith #MastoDoaine! I'm trying to locate a house called Albert Villa around Ballyhackamore. I'm not sure if it still exists, but it was the residence of E. S. Finnigan when he died in 1905. #Twitterstorians #Ireland #NorthernIreland #Belfast
If this were 2018 I’d want to say something and hear more somethings from other #twitterstorians about David Bell’s new NYRB essay on “ego history.” But it’s not. So I’ll think of something a bit more substantive and less crabby and post it here later. The struggle is real. #history #histodons
The hematologist Oswald H. Robertson pioneered the idea of "blood banks" in WWI by packing glass jars of citrated blood from universal donors in an ice-filled chest that he had constructed from ammunition cases. Learn more in my book THE FACEMAKER: https://linktr.ee/drlindseyfitzharris
THE FACEMAKER is out today in paperback!
It tells the poignant true story of the visionary surgeon who rebuilt the faces of WWI's injured heroes, and in the process ushered in the modern era of plastic surgery.

This #ThrowbackThursday we look at our interview with Chris Brickell on Teenagers: The Rise of Youth Culture in New Zealand. Based largely on oral history interviews, combined with archived papers, Brickell’s work provides a broad picture of New Zealand youth.
Through this work we are reminded, as Brickell so aptly put it: ‘The history of young people is everybody’s history’.

The oldest-surviving anatomical theatre in the world, built in 1594 and located in Padua. At the center stands a table on which the dissections of human or animal bodies took place. You can still visit it today. Photo: Daily Art Magazine.
Here are male and female memento mori figurines used for spiritual contemplation from the 19th century. They were meant to remind the owner of the transience of life and material luxury. They are now part of the Wellcome Collection in London.
Possible wedding cake toppers?!
This 17th-century watch is a "memento mori," a reminder of the shortness of life. The inscription roughly translates: "Thus passes wordly glory remember your end." It was sold by Christies in 2017 for £12.5K.
