Dear Vivaldi web browser users,

1) How to PREVENT Proton installing

Right-click, do not left-click, but right-click the VPN Button and click REMOVE.

2) How to REMOVE Proton VPN if installed.

Click on the Vivaldi logo, click on tools, click on extensions. This will list ALL your installed browser extensions, and you can click on REMOVE for Proton VPN.

3) How to PREVENT Vivaldi from doing this in the future (see screenshots, alt text included).

The 1st screenshot details that you should first go into your settings. Proceed to select the category "Privacy and Security". Scroll down and select the button that reads "Manage Sources".
The 2nd screenshot shows that once you click on the button "Managed Sources" two categories display, which are "Tracker Blocking Sources" and "Ad Blocking Sources". The screenshot shows that the 3rd item within "Ad Blocking Sources" reads "Allow ads from our Partners (support Vivaldi)", is un-checked. The photo implies you should un-check this if it is checked (which is is by default).

Software with ads isn't "free" (as in not paid for). We long have a term for that, it's called "#adware". And if it's spying on you while at it, we call it "spyware", or "malicious software" more generally, and remove it.

And programs with paid features aren't "free" either, nor "#freemium" — they're just glorified demo versions.

Let's not let marketing folk manipulate us, and create a world where "shit 2025 hd pro premium+" is the best we can do. Support #FreeSoftware (as in libre), rather than con people.

But what about the apps that #Google pre-installs on Android? We can't uninstall them, and you can't even sign out of the rest if you just need one of them (if you sign out of the YouTube app it signs you out of ALL Google services).

My views have hardened after researching #surveillancecapitalism and I now consider all of Google's apps to be #adware / #spyware.

Is there anything that can be done about this?

It's really hard not to see Apple's new Journal app as anything other than a data collection tool that will be used to simulate its user in years to come.

I mean, that's probably the good outcome. More likely it'll just be used for more banal ad profile generation that Apple will once again lie about doing.

Sorry, but the spying and malware are wholly unacceptable, just like back-doored encryption.

TV, radio and print ads didn't do this stuff, so pointing a finger at the messengers and labeling them radicals is pretty rich. Billionaires are now taking over online media to make sure there is no escape. Seeing EFF alums protesteth too much about #adware while Mozilla gives us real consumer advocacy is quite the contrast these days.

OTOH, if capitalism can't give up its new $TA$I habit, then we have some problems and one of them is called denial.

Fake security software - to include (not limited to) #VPN, game cheats, Netflix, and other utility apps. These in particular not directly found in the Google Play store.

Be wary when installing new apps - whether from the Google Play store or manually via APK.
