The DOE “book banning hoax” press release claimed that challenged books are “age-inappropriate, sexually explicit, or obscene”. Only 13% of banned books in 2023–24 included “on the page” sexual scenes—but 36% featured PoC characters and 25% featured LGBTQ characters.
So, by law in Hungary books with any #LGBTQ content have to be sold with the warning "Non-traditional content!"
On top of being sinister, his system is also:
1. Ironically useful, because Hungarian bookshops didn't have queer sections before, so the label actually makes queer content a lot easier to find
2. Low key surreal when the label is put on folktales, Greek mythology, or biographies like Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls...
3. Useless and dumb
The banning of books has been a #Republican fascist theme for some time now.
There are many books being banned right now that won’t get as much publicity as Julianne Moore’s Freckleface Strawberry.
But that doesn’t make taking a book about a child being bullied due to their appearance off school and library shelves any less wrong.
@gutenberg_org Good news! Especially if the generous donor lives in a red state being mismanaged by #BananaRepublicans. No documents are safe in the #UnitedStates where #BookBanning is spreading like #California #wildfires. #Resist #Tennessee #BookBans
Dear Utahns,
The Utah State Board of Education (USBE) is trying to ban more books and forbid students from bringing their personal copies to schools.
Email its board members with this template from Let Utah Read. https://letutahread.org/localcontrol
Despite his "strongly worded letter", the SC Board of Education showed common sense and correctly rejected Rep John McCravy's call to ban a school textbook on literature.
He claims he merely wants to ban ""pornography"" from classrooms. But his definition is extreme and dangerous. He wants to eradicate people from our state (even the mere mention of their existence) who don't fit in his narrow view of morality.
Freedom to Read: America’s biggest publisher just hired a lobbyist to fight book banning. She’s got a plan.

This is Banned Books Week, an annual event established in 1982 by a coalition of groups representing booksellers, publishers, librarians, authors, teachers and more. According to PEN America, more than 10,000 books were removed from school library shelves over the 2023/2024 school year — a near-triplefold increase from the bans in the previous year. Bans have increasingly restricted stories by and about women and girls. PEN America predicts higher totals to come with more laws concerning content restriction being signed. Here's more from ABC News.

And they included banning an Intermediate Hebrew book because of course they did. No one can 'nazi' the GOP hates and will hurt everyone.

#Indiana is once again making national news for the wrong reasons: #BookBanning & targeting marginalized identities. Thanks to @NewsHour, I learned about @loudmouthindy. A brick&mortar book store that focuses on banned books. I am going to support this venture & hope you will 2.

The US state of Utah releases its first list of banned books.
«They want to make it so that if one or two parents or school board members don’t like a book, they can easily take it away from every single resident in the state.»
Well beyond merely ironic to use democracy as the delivery vehicle for a policy of tyrannical rule by minority.
I also have come to think it not coincidental that our plutocratic overlords are devising schemes like this, which I see as the political analogs of leveraged buyouts, which also allow one power beyond what seems like should be their rightfully earned means, distorting the natural checks and balances of a market, democracy here being the marketplace of ideas.
A number of recent political moves have had this shape, not least of which the capture of the Supreme Court and really brazen exploitation of its power to bootstrap other independent power structures, leaving themselves as gatekeepers, but making these less regulated structures more untouchable.
Capture of the voting structures locally in each state feels like another. Privatization of government services is another. Injecting religion into the public sphere is another. The according of protected rights to corporations ("legal people") is another. In my mind, these all share a common tactical structure of exploiting a legislative weakness to create an unchecked power structure.
Further to the death of irony, too, the GOP wrongly complains, and recently offers Project 2025 as alleged antidote, that FDA, CDC, NOAA, and other science-based agencies are on par, doing the same. They want party loyalists installed there to keep science more responsive to the ruling party. As if that science is a thing one can or should vote on. But then they create their own similarly extragovernmental groups and processes but make no effort to make THOSE groups responsive to party.
It leaves me flabbergasted.

It seems to me that the banning/burning of books in a 2024 United States of America would be a huge, never ending main stream media story.
I suppose the media forgot about the "book thing and human sized ovens" of 1930s-1940s Germany.
Just pre-ordered “That Librarian: The Fight Against Book Banning in America” by Amanda Jones (via my local #bookshop, Cavalier House Books.)
Amanda is a force for good here in Louisiana, where we’re facing some nasty things. So excited to see her filling a much needed national role on these issues.
(What’s this strange feeling? Is it … pride in things happening in #Louisiana??)

I highly recommend following @everylibrary and donating to them, even small amounts. They are the only entity I know that gives pro-bono help when #libraries and #librarians are under attack from right-wing (well-funded) groups like Moms for Liberty. #bookbanning
