The Eyewall: Potential for catastrophic flooding by the weekend in the Mid-South and near the Ohio Valley

"...The National Weather Service in Paducah, KY did not mince words this afternoon in their briefing on the upcoming rainstorm across the Ohio Valley: “Significant and potentially historic rainfall will begin Wednesday afternoon, with numerous rounds of heavy rain continuing into the first half of the weekend, leading to potentially catastrophic flash flooding.”

BBC: Mandalay was the 'city of gold' - now it reeks of death

"...So many corpses have piled up since a 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck last Friday close to Mandalay, that they have had to be "cremated in stacks", one resident says...."

Hearing from California, Iowa, Ohio and Oregon that #FEMA and #DHS has not released any disaster grant reimbursements in over 30 days. Most requests were submitted circa 2/20/25 with no funds received as of 3/26/25.

These are critical emergency disaster recovery grants. Lack of approved disaster funding will cripple governments as they work on their budgets. These reimbursements come from American tax dollars that are put into the Disaster Relief Fund.

#DHS Secy #KristiNoem [dog killer] told a Cabinet meeting Monday that the dept would move to “eliminate” the govt’s #disaster relief agency, #FEMA, days after #Trump signed an EO directing state & local govnts to “play a more active & significant role” in responding to catastrophes.

#Noem, whose dept oversees FEMA, has previously vowed to “get rid of FEMA the way it exists today”; Trump has said he would close the agency entirely, which would require an act of #Congress.

> Even if help is on the way, it may not come quickly. That has prompted people to step in, an informal response that has grown more organized with each crisis. “We all need to be our own first responders because these things are happening really, really fast,” Zegre said.

Grist · ‘We know what it’s like’: How Appalachian towns are learning to help each other after floodsBy Katie Myers

Today in Labor History March 12, 1928: The St. Francis Dam failed in Los Angeles, California, killing 431 people. It is the second deadliest disaster in California, after the 1906 earthquake, and one of the worst U.S. civil engineering disasters ever. A defective foundation and design flaws caused the failure. Yet, the inquest absolved chief engineer, William Mulholland, of all criminal responsibility, and he continued to earn a salary from the Bureau of Public Works (though his career was effectively ended). The authorities continued to find the remains of victims of the flood until the mid-1950s. Many of the victims were washed out to sea. Some washed ashore as far south as Mexico. Mulholland was also the designer of the 233-mile Los Angeles Aqueduct, which sucks water from the Owens Valley and is a major cause of the depletion of the fragile Mono Lake. As its water levels continues to decline, it threatens the world’s second largest gull rookery, home to up to 50,000 birds. The aqueduct’s construction, and the shady methods Mulholland used to acquire the water rights, led to the California Water Wars between L.A. County and Owens Valley farmers. Many of those same Anglo farmers (or their predecessors) usurped the land from Piute people during the 1863 Owens Valley Indian War, which was precipitated, in part, by the vast loss of human and cattle lives, and the displacements, caused by the Megaflood of 1861, which inundated much of the West, from Idaho and Oregon, down to northern Baja California. The corruption related to the construction of the aqueduct has been portrayed in the film Chinatown, and in the nonfiction book, “Cadillac Desert.”

The Black Elephant is a hybrid of two widely used metaphors:

The Black Swan is a hard-to-foresee event which changes everything.
The Elephant in the Room is an enormous issue that everyone knows is there, but no one wants to talk about.

The Black Elephant is an event that, when it happens, everyone will try to pretend was a Black Swan, when all along it was the Elephant in the Room.

Fun with the internet archive: cheesy govt PSA short films.

All the "experts" they say are going to be helping you navigate fallout and radiation risks were...defunded and disbanded a long time ago, not to mention what's happening to the remaining agencies now. Just saying.

Also, most houses built today no longer have basements, so....

" The modeling center runs the computer models used in day-to-day weather forecasting, and ensures that weather data correctly goes into these models and that they are operating correctly.

The lease cancellation was first reported by The Verge. The National Weather Service didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

The NOAA employee told Axios the cancellations — along with recent layoffs, early retirements, and travel and hiring limitations — point to an effort to dismantle the agency."
