“We’re at the #Napster moment in the #AI race. (for #books) When we started streaming music in the early 2000s, most of it was stolen. That wasn’t going to work in the long run. Who could afford to be a musician if no one paid for music.” —Prof. #TobyWalsh, artificial intelligence at the University of New South Wales

Irresistible Bliss turned out to be exactly what it says on the tin. I enjoyed it so much that I went on to the third Soul Coughing album, 1998's El Oso. Then I went back in time to 1994 to listen to an old favourite, Ruby Vroom. Down to This is among many fun tracks on this album;

From memory, Sugar Free Jazz and
Bus to Beelzebub were among the tunes I downloaded as mp3s from Napster, back when that was a thing.

@DJDarren @labr Story time! "This Holiday Season", often attributed (wrongly) to #TomWaits and #PeterMurphy. It "went viral" without credits on P2P file sharing sites like #Napster circa Y2K, when we were never really sure if what we were downloading was what it said it was, and this one wasn't, but what was it? Turns out it's a clever parody from #PornOrchard of #AthensGA, from a 1992 compilation "The Mother Of All Flagpole Christmas Albums". One for the Grinches ;-) youtube.com/watch?v=238FZYg3X20

#PenguinRandomHouse changes their in-book copyright statement to forbid #AI training on the content.

However, this is no reason for authors to joy, says @pluralistic, citing evidence going back to #Napster and #Spotify. #MustRead

«Until then, remember, just because you're on their side, it doesn't mean they're on your side. They don't want to prevent AI slop from reducing your wages, they just want to make sure it's their AI slop puts you on the breadline.»

"The public’s appetite for piracy didn’t go away, and for every Napster that was sued into oblivion, three more sprung up in its place. Their names are now commemorated only in the court decisions that eventually destroyed them: Aimster, StreamCast, and of course, Grokster."

@z428 @BypassBlues gab vor ein paar Monaten mal eine Serie bei @gnulinux
zu #MusikStraeming

gnulinux.ch/serie-musik-stream

Es wurden #Freegal #Qobuz #Tidal #Roon #Spotify #Deezer #Napster verglichen nach diesen Kriterien:

" Welche Firma steckt dahinter?

An update to my post about #Napster :napster:

I messaged support to say "I can't find the option to import my Apple Music library"

The response was to explain it was "temporarily removed due to technical challenges" but that I can 'reset my Apple Music password to something temporary and provide it to them' over email, so they can initiate the process manually.

:tiktok_shock:

Note: Please do not reset your Apple password and send it over email to Napster support.

oslo.town - MastodonMatt 🌻 (@matt@oslo.town)I read a thread on here which said #Napster pays artists (presumably they mean labels) the best, so I downloaded the app to see what it's all about in 2024 because I know it's going to be very different to the Napster I remeber of 2000. :crystal_ball_fb: And it seems on the surface like a competent streaming app. :face_smile_fb: There's not that much difference between #Spotify / #Tidal / #Deezer / etc. these days to be honest. But I think I'm sticking with #AppleMusic. :face_sunglasses_fb:

But tomorrow, Internet Archive is replying to legal arguments that libraries scanning and loaning the books they own amounts to the impact of #Napster on the #musicindustry in the ‘00s, but for publishing revenue.

…does it now?

The #RIAA even included this chart in their amicus brief, which shows how recording industry revenues plunged down by half over the years that the internet really started to happen.
