@mekkaokereke as a former physical therapist I can attest. In that life, I was surrounded by women who were indeed coaching men in matters of physical performance. People just didn't think of it that way.

The people who help you relearn how to walk after a stroke, rehab from ACL surgery, return to jogging after back pain, or recover from an Achilles tendon strain... they're all coaches at the end of the day and most of them are women.

It was in a medical setting, but we were applying principles of athletic performance to the daily lives of ordinary people who may or may not have needed that coaching for athletic gain.

Oh, but they're at vastly different levels... uh, we really think that people who can train someone with a spinal cord injury to boost quad muscle recruitment by 20% so they can stand, can't also help someone run faster?

Women have been doing this all along. We just discount what they do because we're not used to seeing them in the role of advisors.

Every living thing is a complex system, with many kinds of intelligence seamlessly blended together. In human beings, the mind learns and adapts to the body’s abilities and limits, and the body learns and adapts to the demands of our chosen lifestyle. In this month’s blog post, I explore embodiment, how three kinds of learning work together, and how practices like yoga and physical therapy engage all three to powerful effect.

Pain Neuroscience Education: Teaching People About Pain

Evidence shows that patients who better understand their pain and what pain truly is experience less pain, have less fear, move better, exercise more and can regain hope.
This physical therapy textbook explains how to teach your patients about pain and how to integrate pain neuroscience education into your practice.

Since my truck broke down a few weeks ago, I've been riding my bike for 100% of local trips, about 100 miles per week.
Overall I'm very pleased with how my fitness for riding is improving, but there is one problem: my shoulders are killing me! It's not like the muscle soreness I got in my legs when I first increased my riding, it's been getting worse not better over time. I don't have any general loss of range of motion, but it feels hot and tingly all the time and I get stabbing pain at random times when I move my arms.
Someone I know suggested finding a physical therapist who understands cycling to advise me on riding posture and exercises I could do, and another person suggested getting a professional bike fitting, and another suggested I just need to raise my handlebars to get weight off my arms. Has anyone here dealt with this issue? What helped you?

At #PhysicalTherapy:
"Do you have any questions?"
Me: Will I be able to play piano?
[She thinks a minute} "Yeah, at some point."
Me: THAT'S AMAZING, I'VE NEVER PLAYED PIANO IN MY LIFE!

Yes, folks, after missing so many opportunities over the years, FINALLY I remembered to do this. I can die happy.

We've asked #MontereyCounty Health Department & Transportation Agency for #Monterey County to team up on getting word out to #HealthCare providers in the county that TAMC has free bike racks, lockers & repair stations. Often we've biked to a PT appt, etc. only to find nowhere to lock our bike.

Hartnell Professional Center, Monterey (which houses #Community Hospital of the #MontereyPeninsula / #CHOMP #PhysicalTherapy & other medical offices) DOES have a bike rack. They also have picnic tables, benches, shade trees. :)

Sadly, many benches have been removed from City of Monterey public spots (e.g., USPS Post Office & Alvarado Street). We mention that—and, in contrast, City of #Seaside's revitalized West Broadway, which is loaded with benches, and bike racks—in "Rest Stops: People who bike, walk, or otherwise get about sometimes just need to 'sit a spell.'" bikemonterey.org/rest-stops-pe
