#LegendaryWednesday: `In southern parts of Ireland during the nineteenth century, guisers at #Samhain made a hobby horse called the Láir Bhán or white mare. A man covered in a white sheet and carrying a decorated horse skull would lead a group of youths, blowing on cow horns, from farm to farm. At each house they recited verses, some of which “savoured strongly of paganism”, and the farmer was expected to give them food. If he fed them well he could expect good fortune from the “Muck Olla,” but if he failed them, bad fortune would dog his heels for the coming year!` #Celtic

I'm not sure that shovelling compost around is part of the traditional observance of #Samhain amongst our Celtic neighbours, but it feels fairly appropriate for the day.

The garden has given to us throughout the lighter half of the year. Now, we start to close the cycle and give back, taking advantage of the abundance of fallen leaves and what is probably the last batch of lawn clippings for the year.

Two compost bins made from wooden pallets stand within, but close to the edge of a wooded area with open grassland visible beyond. In the foreground is a large loose mound mostly made up of fresh grass clippings, with some autumn leaves scattered through them. To the left of the bins is a black wheelbarrow with a long handled shovel and a muck fork leaning against it. The left-hand bin is completely full and mounded up 30-40cm above the top of the pallets. The pallet forming the front of the right-hand bin has been removed and is leaning on the right side of the bin. This bin is around half filled. There is a pile of mostly composted material immediately in front of it which has been pulled out of it.
