This tree was planted 31 years ago as a 3-foot bareroot sapling. My son and I used to play catch beside it. Later, I would throw pop flies over the tree. Now, there's no room for playing catch...

Edit: Corrected date of old photo. It was the year 2000. My son -- 10 years old -- had asked the barber for an NBA haircut (probably a fade, but he got a bowl cut).

A tall, graceful leafless tree with mottled bark (mostly white bark toward the top). The tree is being illuminated from the right (west). Seen against a clear blue sky. The tree is approximately 75 feet tall (23 m.).

Our magnolia is just showing off this year! Already had people stopping outside to take pictures of and with it (my fav being the elderly couple taking turns to pose in front of it with their Jack Russell, and then giggling together and waving when they saw me watching through the window).

This is something that most people would walk past without a glance. Even mild magnification brings this scene to life, a thing as remarkable in its way as the Grand Canyon.

The extraordinary colours and textures are of a twig on an old Field Maple tree (Acer campestre). On old trees, these cork growths develop, like extended wings.

New bright green indented leaves spring from a twig which has narrow longitudinal ridges radiating around the circumference. Up close, there are earthy colour layers, as in a slice through sedimentary rock
