"According to Graham, based on the big jump in page views he's observed over the past two months, the Internet Archive is drawing many more visitors than usual to its services — journalists, researchers and other inquiring minds. Some want to consult the archive for information lost or changed in the purge, while others aim to contribute to the archival process.

"There's a groundswell of support for the Internet Archive because of the dramatic shift that's going on in parts of the government web infrastructure that you wouldn't imagine would change," said Brewster Kahle, the founder and current director of the Internet Archive. "People are coming and rallying behind us — by using it, by pointing at things, helping organize things, by submitting content to be archived — data sets that are under threat or have been taken down."

Nancy Krieger, a social epidemiologist at Harvard University who likened the purge to "a digital book burning" in a February interview with NPR's Ailsa Chang, is one of them. She's teamed up with other scientists to try to preserve federal health data that has recently disappeared from government websites. She helped develop a list of terms to send to the Internet Archive to aid the search and preservation effort.

"We want to preserve public health data that are crucial for people's well-being," she told NPR."

Last week in Leiden, Brewster Kahle was presented with the 2024 ProjectUil by the Dutch Wikipedia community. He explained how the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine has helped fix millions of broken links, ensuring citations on Wikipedia remain valid and accessible across multiple language editions.

Update. "As the Trump administration purges web pages, this group is rushing to save them"
npr.org/2025/03/23/nx-s1-53265

"After President Trump's inauguration in January, some federal web pages vanished. While…were removed entirely, many came back online with changes that…officials said were made to conform to Trump's executive orders to remove "diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility policies." Thousands of datasets were wiped — mostly at agencies focused on science and the environment…Information about climate change, reproductive health, gender identity and sexual orientation also have been on the chopping block…The #InternetArchive [@internetarchive] is among the few efforts that exist to catch the stuff that falls through the digital cracks, while also making that information accessible to the public. Six weeks into the new administration, #WaybackMachine director Graham said, the Internet Archive had cataloged some 73,000 web pages that had existed on U.S. government websites that were expunged after Trump's inauguration."

Update. "How the Wayback Machine is preserving outdated government websites."

"The #WaybackMachine is helping preserve the record of government websites before they were changed by the TTrump administration. CBS News Confirmed's Rhona Tarrant reports."

> The few properly recognized women and black scientists are quickly having their biographies wiped from US records and institutions. Please maintain a record of them

This is where the @internetarchive and their Wayback Machine really shows its value. Presumably they've been taking snapshots of all government websites for years, so we can compare versions from BOS (Before Orange Stalin) with those from DOS (During Orange Stalin).

Update The #Trump admin has taken down the #OSTP #NelsonMemo.

It was formerly at this URL.

You can still find it in the @internetarchive #WaybackMachine, as recently as Jan 18, 2025.
web.archive.org/web/2025011802

We can't tell yet whether it was taken down because Trump officials didn't like the #OpenAccess policies it laid out, didn't like its use of #DEI language — or both.

The #internetarchive has been under pressure in the last years. Now with #ElonMusk ‘s blitzkrieg on federal departments, it makes me paranoid that this great archive needs to have a mirror somewhere off of American soil where #MAGA can’t seize and destroy it. All kinds of data need a safe place to live, not just the stuff they like. As people in the Data Hoarding and #archiving communities have pointed out, on January 21, there were 307,854 datasets on #datagov. As of Thursday, there are 305,564 datasets. Many of the #deletions happened immediately after Trump was inaugurated, according to snapshots of the #website saved on the #InternetArchive’s #WaybackMachine Harvard Univ researcher Jack Cushman has been taking snapshots of Data.gov’s datasets both before and after the inauguration #disparition

404 Media · Archivists Work to Identify and Save the Thousands of Datasets Disappearing From Data.govMore than 2,000 datasets have disappeared from data.gov since Trump was inaugurated. But analyzing exactly what happened and where it went is going to take some time.

Was going through old physical photos, weeding out all the old 'nameless landscape and mountain' shots, prints with people on them that I now have no recollection of.... etc, as one does at this time of year.

Found this interesting one - that's my desk at work back in '96. The IBM tower behind the desk was the TV station's web server. The hardware stack on top was the ISDN connection to our ISP. At that time, local ISP's didn't offer web hosting of the kind we wanted/needed.

If you want a giggle, check out the Wayback Machine snapshot of the site.

Heh, the system specs:
'Our webserver is an IBM PC Server 320 with 3 gigabytes of hard disk space, 156 megabytes of RAM, running on an Intel Pentium 90mhz processer (with the ability to upgrade to dual Pentiums).'

#InternetArchive and #WaybackMachine and #OpenLibrary need money.

They are not only victim of recent cyberattacks, they also host a very important service to the whole world that actually should be publicly funded anyhow.

You can not only pay via #PayPal (and more) help.archive.org/help/how-do-i but also use a simple wire transfer help.archive.org/help/how-do-i also including Euro/SEPA/IBAN. 👍

I'm wiring a few bucks each month because I think that they really should be funded well. 👋

Continued thread

#Hackers struck the #InternetArchive last week, leaking the information of millions of users & defacing it with a message taunting the #nonprofit’s website for running on a shoestring budget. To prevent further leaks, the #Internet Archive’s team took the site, including its popular #WaybackMachine, offline. It’s the first time in its almost 30-yr history that it has suffered an outage of longer than a few hrs, founder Brewster Kahle told WaPo. Most of the site remains offline a wk later.
