New paper out.

What happens when you make a model that includes realistic details about how people discuss ideas and decide how to act upon them? The answer is that with just 3 such elements of realism, one can mathematically explain the emergence of commonly observed situations, such as reaching a consensus and exchanging opinions, but also the separation of ideologies and the appearance of stable polarization. Not only this, but one can also account for phenomena such as peer pressure, cognitive dissonance, tactical voting and toxic idealism ( @benroyce I told you I was going to do it 😀 ) and prove how they affect the final state of the system.

#TacticalVoting…will you be doing it tomorrow?

If so, how do you feel about voting for a party who isn’t your first choice just to get the #Tories out?

Do you think a #Labour government with a landslide majority will entertain the idea of electoral reform? It’s just UK and Belarus using FPTP in Europe.

The Guardian · Tactical voting could wipe the Tories out for a generation. Here’s how I think it should be doneBy Carol Vorderman

Its pretty clear that tactical voting to remove Tories from Parliament is going to be a big element in the election.

A key tactical voting website crashed due to levels of demand for its services (now back online), and the publicity around tactical voting is more strident & clearer than in previous elections.

For voters, tactical voting looks like being the democratic weapon of choice after 14 years of Tory mismanagement & corruption.

My constituency, with changes, has been a safe Tory seat since 19-FUCKING-10, so previously my vote really didn’t matter.

Thanks to boundary changes and the Tory collapse, it’s now a Tory/Lib Dem marginal, so I’ll be holding my nose and voting Lib Dem on 4 July, because I’d vote for Sutekh himself if it got the #ToriesOut.

It’s worth checking how your own constituency stands this time round for #tacticalvoting:

Greens picked up 315 local seats in the past two years. They (along w LD, SNP, PC, etc) are important local forces. With support in coming years, Greens and LD could be national forces.

But for this GE, there are only two parties that can command a majority and hence the media coverage.

I love a lot about the Greens, and wish them well in Brighton and Bristol, but as long as there is #FPTP , we need #TacticalVoting

@beecycling

I expect so. This #UKGeneralElection has become about whether the CUP or the LDs get to be HM Opposition.

If enough people overcome both-sides-the-same apathy and vote tactically to stop the CUP from winning seats, then the number of CUP seats could actually go lower than the number of LD seats. It's a slim chance, but actually possible this time around.

And the CUP/LCP see-saw that has been going up and down since the 1930s, stops.

Of course, one of the the things we all need to be considering is how to vote tactically... so here for your consideration is one guide to how to vote tactically in your constituency.

Just type in you postcode for advice (based on polling) on how you might vote tactically to get the Tories out (or if you have other priorities, how to maximise the impact of your vote under the current FPTP system)
