On this day in 1653, the city of New Amsterdam was incorporated. Thanks to the band "They Might Be Giants", I instantly know that New Amsterdam is now called, New York.

Last boost was a random short story which made it to my feed thanks to the #coins reference. Good chance to look up the custom though: Placing coins on the eyes of the deceased goes back to ancient Greeks who believed the dead needed coins to pay Charon to cross the river Styx. My most recent ancient coin purchase is this antoninianus - a silver coin - of Philip I the Arab.

Imho, both the obverse and reverse are really nice and in a good style, and it's about as well centered as you can hope for with these coins.

It features Aequitas, the Roman personification of, well, equity and fairness.

An old but beautiful silver coin showing the Roman emperor Philip I on the obverse wearing a radiate crown. He has short hair and a beard and is clearly a military man. Around his portrait, in a circle, is the legend IMP M IVL PHILIPPVS AVG, for Imperator Marcus Iulius Philippus Augustus: The reverse features a standing figure of Aequitas, a roman virtue of equaity and fairness, with a pair of scales and a cornucopia. The legend araound her says AEQVITAS AVG, for 'Aequitas augusti', the fairness of the emperor. The coin is well struck, with good detail and clean fields showing some yellowing from the 1900 years that has passed since it was made. It is struck on a broad flan which is typical of early issues from this emperor, and has a very recognizable 3rd century style.
