On this day in 1653, the city of New Amsterdam was incorporated. Thanks to the band "They Might Be Giants", I instantly know that New Amsterdam is now called, New York.

Here is their song "Istanbul (not Constantinople)": youtube.com/watch?v=0XlO39kCQ-

And here is my Byzantine Follis I managed to squeeze in a reference to that song: coinofnote.com/518-27-justin-i

Pompeii continues to enthrall archaeologists, historians & the rest of us alike, nearly 2,000 years after the eruption of Mt Vesuvius. This week's E-Sylum has an article on some gold coins recently recovered from a Roman bathhouse: coinbooks.org/v28/esylum_v28n0

My own (tenuous) link is this Roman Republic Aes Grave - which although this one wasn't found there, similar coins were: coinofnote.com/roman-republic-

What is your favourite numismatic reference for #Ancient #Rome? This week's E-Sylum has a review of "The Roman Provinces, 300 BCE–300 CE - Using Coins as Sources"
by Andrew Burnett, which looks quite interesting. What books would you recommend?

Last boost was a random short story which made it to my feed thanks to the #coins reference. Good chance to look up the custom though: Placing coins on the eyes of the deceased goes back to ancient Greeks who believed the dead needed coins to pay Charon to cross the river Styx. Greeks were also known to put a coin known as Charon's obol in the mouths of deceased people en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coins_fo

Trove of Persian Gold Coins Discovered in Ancient Greek City.

In modern-day Turkey, a team of researchers from the Notion Archeological Project has made a discovery that seems straight out of a legend: a collection of gold coins, over 2,000 years old, stashed in a small pot...: mymodernmet.com/persian-gold-d

I boosted @currencies post of Wu Zhu coins from #ancient #China partly because I liked the image of a pile of them. An interesting #photograph can be a great way to see something afresh! No promises of interesting #photography but here is a post I wrote on the 115-113 BC Wu Zhu coins: coinofnote.com/115-113-b-c-chi

My most recent ancient coin purchase is this antoninianus - a silver coin - of Philip I the Arab.

Imho, both the obverse and reverse are really nice and in a good style, and it's about as well centered as you can hope for with these coins.

It features Aequitas, the Roman personification of, well, equity and fairness.
