"People who travel the world will tell you two things that they really love: Whales and the Grand Canyon.
The majestic Orca whales are now at risk from the massive oil tankers departing the shores of British Columbia with thick crude oil from Alberta tar sands in Canada, bound for distant refineries and ports.

"Meanwhile, in the heart of the Southwest, the Grand Canyon, loved by the people of the world, now has a uranium mine spewing radioactive dust into the air, and endangering Havasupai's aquifer and future generations.

"Neither the Appeals Court in Canada, nor the U.S. EPA and Interior have done anything to stop these assaults on the most beloved natural wonders in the world, whales and the Grand Canyon.

"Rueben George, səlilwətaɬ, Tsleil-Waututh Nation, remembers the long fight to halt the Trans Mountain Pipeline, now carrying crude oil from Alberta tar sands to the Salish Sea, which flows off the shores of British Columbia and Washington State to the Pacific.

"George said they thought they were winning their case in Canada's Appeal Court.

"'They said you're right it's going to kill all the Orca whales, you're right -- but we're going to build it anyway,' George said at the Salish Sea Assembly in Seattle in November.

"The uranium mine in the Grand Canyon is now spraying radioactive dust on Havasupai's medicine plants, and into the air for the world's travelers to breathe. The uranium mine, operated by Energy Fuels of Canada, threatens the aquifer of Havasupai and future generations.

"The mine's radioactive truck transport is a deadly risk for Supai, Paiute, Dine', Hopi and Ute on the haul route. The radioactive ore is transported by truck to the Energy Fuels mill in the White Mesa Ute community in southeastern Utah.

"Interior's Deb Haaland, who is Laguna Pueblo and Norwegian, has not only failed to halt the deadly risks and destruction, but has proclaimed that the atomic bomb industry, Los Alamos National Laboratory, will lead the green 'energy transition.'

"Los Alamos Labs produces nuclear weapons and is already poisoning the Pueblo homelands in northern New Mexico with radiation. A federal judge recently halted the push to produce and store more plutonium at the site, citing a risk to the environment."

In 2013, I was #censored by #Facebook for my coverage of the annual #RedUmbrella awareness day in solidarity with local & global #SexWorkers. I actually never violated any of their TOS. My performer friend was clothed but wore nude bodysuit & pasties. Red Umbrella march & rally is to advocate for sex workers' rights & their safety & to honour the lives of sex workers lives lost & bring awareness to a marginalized population of our society.

I decided to do a cookies protest against FB #censorship & they censored my cookies too.
I'm so glad to have deleted my FB.

When talking about #controversial #music, there are few more shining examples than #CopKiller. Recorded by #IceT’s rock group Body Count, “Cop Killer” is a heated #song about a victim of #PoliceBrutality who violently takes matters into his own hands. The song faced criticism from #LawEnforcement agencies, the Parents Music Resource Center #PMRC, President #GeorgeHWBush and the public in general. Some people responded through #protests and #boycotts of any company associated with the distribution of the record. This caused sales to skyrocket, but also prompted certain stores to take the album off their shelves. Some countries, such as #NewZealand, attempted to have the song and the #rap group itself completely #banned. Stockholders threatened to pull out from #WarnerBrosRecords and executives received #DeathThreats. While Ice-T stood by his work, stating that it was a #ProtestSong meant to reflect hateful emotions rather than encourage violence, he subsequently decided to recall the album, removing the trouble-making song upon re-release.

“Physical” was very popular in the US & UK but some radio stations #banned the #song due to #SexualContent & they #censored lines - “There’s nothing left to talk about unless it’s horizontally.”
#Controversy also surrounded this song because the #MusicVideo featured a #GayCouple holding hands (who ignored Olivia’s advances). That one scene caused it to be banned by some broadcasters & #MTV censored it.

This song was a profound & powerful depiction of Billie Holiday’s horror over a #lynching. It was #BannedInTheUSA radio for its heavy, morbid content upon its release in 1939. As dark as the lyrics were, this was a song that the public truly needed to hear at the time. In 1965, Billie Holiday’s #music was #censored again when #ABCradio refused to play “Love for Sale” as the #song’s #lyrics were about #prostitution.

I kept noticing that so many of the emails (from the people making the award decisions!) had things in them along the lines of, "I've never read it, but it MIGHT be a problem..." and "I've never read it, but I've heard..."

Censorship is always based on ignorance-- not only the desire to remain ignorant of new ideas, but the opinions of people who have never actually read or viewed the books/film/art they are trying to censor.

I guess now we can only *hope* that the people who vote on #TheOscars actually spend a few hours watching all of the nominated films before voting. 😠🙄

2/🧵 For anyone wanting to read more about the backstory to this #HugoAwardsDebacle, this article gives more details about the specific authors, books, and short stories which were blocked from consideration and about the Committee's leaked emails.

Something which should also be scandalous on some level, imo, is that the Committee was voting on works they say they had never read. How can you fairly evaluate and compare stories you've never read?

Apparently, the Hugos are decided on book sleeve blurbs and social media posts.😠☹️

1/🧵 You might have heard there's been a #censorship scandal rocking #ScienceFiction literature's biggest award, the #HugoAwards.

The annual ceremony was held in #Chengdu, #China. Although no evidence has been found linking any direct Chinese govt influence on the Award Committee's actions, leaked emails prove that the Hugo Committee DID remove potential nominees before they could be considered, because they were anticipating possible offenses against Chinese govt policies.

(This is how #Fascist governments work-- not only because govt cronies enforce their own authoritarian laws, but because ordinary people join in and support their policies.)

Now, author #SamanthaMills (who won the Hugo for her #ShortStory "RabbitTest," about abortion access) has posted that she has refused her Hugo and removed mentions of her award from her website and books.
