The text for the published journal paper about the temple to Mithras at Inveresk is available free to read thanks to the author on Edinburgh University's Research Explorer website at https://www.research.ed.ac.uk/en/publications/mithras-in-scotland-a-mithraeum-at-inveresk-east-lothian #Mithras #RomanBritain #AncientRome #Scotland #EastLothian #Inveresk #Archaeology
Watching a recorded Treadwells bookshop talk about the Mithras cult in London. And remembering the fairly recent find of an altar to Mithras at Inveresk in Scotland. Many pics viewable in free to read supplementary material for the paywall-locked journal article. https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/britannia/article/abs/mithras-in-scotland-a-mithraeum-at-inveresk-east-lothian/544B6233F7F06415EE049C60A827C3C0#supplementary-materials #Mithras #RomanBritain #AncientRome #Scotland #EastLothian #Inveresk #Archaeology

Traprain Law, a whaleback volcanic lump rising to 724ft in East Lothian. It was occupied from the Bronze Age and is said to have been home to King Loth of the Gododdin, who gave Lothian its name. More pics and info: https://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/eastlinton/traprainlaw/index.html
The extremely elusive ruin of St Patrick’s Chapel, behind the shore north of Gullane in East Lothian. It was in use in the early 16th century but was subsequently inundated by sand until excavated in the early 20th century. Dirleton Castle in East Lothian, perched proudly on a rocky outcrop and as improbable as it is impressive. A castle was first built here in the late 1200s and it remained in active use until the mid-1600s. More pics and info: https://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/dirleton/dirletoncastle/index.html

Morning run
With temperatures due to reach a heady 22C, and a lot off the inevitable car time, we got out at 6 this morning for a very pleasant run around Humbie. 10k, road, no traffic. Harvest has begun and a gaggle have taken possession of a newly cut field, presumably picking up loose corn
From today's long walk with chum, from the edge of North Berwick, along to the Fidra Lighthouse and back. First time we've walked that way since he lost the last of his old rescue greyhounds - felt odd to walk it without a doggo companion.
Good walk with chum, from the edge of North Berwick, along to the Fidra Lighthouse and back.
The erosion visible on the dunes is partly weathering, partly caused by Sandworm activity (blessed be the Maker...)
#UK government planning nuclear site in #Scotland - Jack
"The #SNP leader said the Scottish government would not support new nuclear power stations in the country, and was investing in #renewable energy projects."
"Scotland's last nuclear power plant - at #Torness in #EastLothian - is scheduled to be shut down by 2028."
May 16, 2024
"The UK government is planning to build a new #nuclear reactor in #Scotland despite opposition from Holyrood, according to Scottish Secretary Alister Jack.
"He told a House of Lords committee he had asked the UK energy minister to plan for such a site as part of a UK-wide strategy.
"The Conservative minister also called for the Lords to be allowed to scrutinise Scottish laws.
"First Minister John Swinney accused Mr Jack of being a 'menacing behaviour' and said his government would have 'nothing to do with #NuclearPower.'"
One of two midget submarines, or XT-Craft, whose remains can still be seen at low tide in Aberlady Bay in East Lothian. They were moored here in 1946 and used as training targets by locally-based RAF aircraft. More pics and info: https://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/aberlady/aberladybay/index.html

The amazing - and amazingly small - harbour at Seacliff in East Lothian. This was created in 1890 using a steam engine and compressed air to carve the harbour out of solid rock. More pics and info: https://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/northberwick/seacliff/index.html
Last run of the day. We dodged the rain for most of the day, but into every life a lot of rai…. must fall. Even the dug was not impressed.
The superb beach at Gullane Bents, in Gullane, East Lothian. It looks north-west over Gullane Bay to the Firth of Forth and at high tide the beach can all but disappear. More pics and info: https://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/gullane/gullane/index.html
The new #AshLagoon was the busiest I've seen it too, in spite of the lack of plants.
Also, I didn't realise at the time but if you look carefully you can just make out the #QueensferryCrossing in the far distance.
Surprised to find the gatekeepers of this pathway were crows. The #birdsong today once past the gatekeepers was especially wonderful (not from the crows I hasten to add)
