Announcing an upcoming panel on probably the most active controversy in #bioethics that people outside medicine (and many within) haven't heard of, #ta-NRP for #organdonation. (We're facing decisions about this at #UCSF and many other hospitals are also considering their policies.) This is a method for increasing the quantity and quality of organs available for transplantation, but which many critics believe violates the dead donor rule. In ta-NRP circulatory death of the donor is declared, after which perfusion is restored to thoracic and abdominal organs while brain perfusion is (we think) surgically prevented. Ta-NRP is performed in Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, France, and in some centers in the US; is contrary to guidelines in Canada, Australia, and NZ; and has been paused in Belgium and the UK pending further study.

At #Neuroethics2025 in Munich next month we'll host a panel, International Controversies over ta-NRP for Organ Procurement: Brain Perfusion and the Dead Donor Rule, including panelists to share key perspectives from three countries where ta-NRP has been performed, critiquing different conceptions of the role of the brain in circulatory death and how national professional and public norms affect views of this procedure:

  • Karola Kreitmair (Univ. of Wisconsin, US) is a philosopher whose work addresses philosophical arguments regarding ta-NRP and the dead donor rule.
  • Amelia Hessheimer (Hosp. Univ. La Paz, Spain) is a transplant surgeon and co-author of the European Society for Organ Transplantation's consensus statement on NRP.
  • Alex Manara (N. Bristol NHS Trust, UK) is an intensivist and author of an influential early analysis on ta-NRP and the dead donor rule.

February 21 was National Caregiver's Day. I was thinking about caregiving (in fact, speaking about it at #UCSF) but didn't post. Here is a photo of my mother and father, Tzip and Jerry, on their honeymoon. Both are gone. Many years of her life were dedicated to taking care of my father, who died of early-onset Alzheimer's. I love this photo.

The #MAGA candidate for the presidency can't find his words, can't speak them, and can't put them together coherently. Here is a figure from a book I wrote with #UCSF #neurologist Dr. Bruce Miller explaining the different kinds of aphasia. The 1st 2 #variants are associated w/#FTD. The 3rd & the one my father had is associated with #Alzheimer's. #Trump played music last night at his rally instead of speaking. Music can be a balm for people with #dementia. They often remember it when words fail.

Main differences among the 3 variants of Primary Progressive Aphasia. Clinical diagnosis and atrophy on MRI. Semantic Variant of PPA (impaired naming); nonfluent variant of PPA (fewer words); logopenic variant of PPA (word-finding pauses).

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read for Those Impacted by Dementia Reviewed in the United States on September 20, 2024 This book is a great account of the personal journey of caregiving paired with a deeper understanding of a dementia diagnosis. Cindy Weinstein depicts the journey of caring long distance for a father with Alzheimer's Disease touching on themes of guilt, grief, and the emotional roller-coaster many caregivers experience. I think any caregiver out there could identify with many parts of her journey. In addition, Dr. Bruce Miller provides a section at the end of each chapter to dive deeper into the science of Alzheimer's Disease from a physician's perspective and does a fabulous job of explaining many of signs, symptoms, and behaviors in someone living with dementia. As someone who works in the dementia field as a social worker for over 6 years, even I came away with new knowledge and perspective after reading this book.

My #memoir, written w/ #UCSF #neurologist Dr. Bruce Miller, turns 3 today. It is about my father's brain, its deterioration from early-onset Alzheimer's, my love for him, and all the grief. I describe a clinical presentation, a memory of my father's illness, and Bruce explains the neurology behind #Alzheimer's and other forms of #dementia. The last chapter remembers my dad before he got sick. Readers have said that they have found the book helpful.

@GottaLaff. Anyone who knows someone w/ #dementia, accompanied by some form of #primary progressive #aphasia, knows what they are hearing when #Trump trips over words, can't find words, makes up words. Here is an image from the #memoir I wrote with #UCSF #neurologist, Dr. Bruce Miller, that has this chart with the different kinds of aphasia. The #book is Finding the Right Words: A Story of Literature, #Grief, & the #Brain.

Main Differences among the three variants of Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA). There is the semantic variant of PPA, the nonfluent variant of PPA, and the logopenic variant. A clinical diagnosis of the 1st variant includes impaired naming et al; the 2nd includes fewer words et al; the 3rd includes word-finding pauses et al. The chart includes images of the atrophy on MRI. Where the damage is in the brain points to the kind of PPA the person has.

The administrator, Sandra Eileen Le, served as academic program officer for UCSF’s School of Nursing’s post-master’s and special studies certificate programs. Le allegedly told students to make out their tuition checks to her or to a merchandiser she purchased from or to leave the payee line blank. She deposited checks into her personal account or joint accounts shared with associates and spent the money on luxury items from that merchandiser and other personal expenses, including gambling and home improvement. She reportedly gave false payment and enrollment records to the university.
