Being neurodivergent and running the buggiest and weirdest possible build of obscure software instead of the default one, with a series of desperate and innovative fixes and kludged together workarounds, one after the other, just to make it work even a little bit.

"Why don't you just...?" some poor fool asks. Well! Have you got 45 minutes because I sure can tell you why I don't just! 😆

I don’t know if it’s the autistic part of me but being able do my daily small things either makes or breaks a day. Maybe I’m a bit eccentric or rigid for wanting to do certain things in a certain way. Telling me I’m bossy or controlling is absolutely not helpful because you’re clearly not seeing the constant panic behind my mask #ActuallyAutistic #Neurodivergent

As a parent who was told their child may have ‘high functioning aspergers’ on their final day of preschool…to finally getting a clinical face to face diagnosis for #autism in Yr 5, I can say categorically #Farage has no comprehension of how longwinded the system is in the UK in terms of diagnosing #neurodivergent conditions.

And that’s just 1st stage…then you have to fight for #EHCP.

The Guardian · Charities attack Farage claims of ‘mental illness problems’ overdiagnosisBy Jessica Elgot

So, the neuropsychologist I’ve been referred to to be assessed regarding ADHD, after two sessions, told me I score way too high on the autism questionnaire, so I must have autism and not ADHD (funny after my previous psychiatrist was sure about my ADHD, but not autism), and my ADHD questionnaire answers are less relevant because the problems “happen in social situations or special contexts” - and I was like ‘aren’t all the contexts special?’, but, of course, didn’t say it out loud - it seems, she’s just one of those who still consider autism and ADHD to be mutually exclusive.

And after that, she said she’s not a specialist in autism, only in ADHD, and I must look for another specialist to talk about autism assessment, and, of course, neither her health center nor my insurance company have one.

And people keep behaving as if those who don’t have an official diagnosis, don’t count! I mean, even financial side aside (hello 340 euros spent for nothing so far!), for someone with executive distinction to get through all those steps is insane and requires quite a lot of effort and dedication from anyone trying to - how can anyone expect all the ND people really go through it?

@timberwraith it gets so much worse. RFK is trying to form a national autism registry using private medical records. Everyone should know exactly where this goes. They’re going to try to exterminate the #neurodivergent. Hell no. We bring this economy to its knees before we let that happen.

Everyone should know exactly where the GOP is taking us and we have to stop them. There have been some calls for general strike. I think we need it.

To all my fellow #ActuallyAutistic #ActuallyADHD and #AUDHD double-winners, I’m curious if you too have felt you had to “make yourself smaller”?

For me it was a survival mechanism…much like masking and passing. And just as damaging.

That’s what drove me to write this essay. I want more of us #neurodivergent people to take up space. To be who we are fully. Not who makes others comfortable.

We need more neurodivergent joy and safety in this world.

@actuallyautistic

Hi. I'm TOO MUCH.

I've spent a lifetime making myself smaller for everyone.

Making myself the version of me that was most useful and comfortable for everyone around me.

And I *HAVE* to stop before I disappear.

I wrote about learning to TAKE UP SPACE: fromemily.com/space-taking-def

Maybe you've made yourself smaller too? Let's TAKE UP SPACE together.

@actuallyautistic

...from Emily Moran BarwickI’ve Spent a Lifetime Making Myself Smaller and I HAVE to Stop Before I Disappear (or “How Buying an Oversized ‘Everyday’ Bag Was a Revolutionary Act of Space-Taking Defiance”)I'm learning I'm allowed to take up space. (And doing it with one BIG-ASS-BAG.)

Hello all, I am adding the recommendations from this thread among others to this list

"Autism doesn't 'Go Away' when you 'Grow Up'": Adult Autism Literature

bookwyrm.social/list/3969/s/au

bookwyrm.socialBook List: "Autism doesn't 'Go Away' when you 'Grow Up'": Adult Autism Literature - BookWyrmThis list includes *mostly*: - both fiction and non-fiction books - characters over the age of 18 - characters explicitly diagnosed or considered to have autistic traits according to the consensus of other neurodivergent readers - authors that are neurodivergent identifying, regardless of diagnosis, and are preferably trans and/or BIPOC. If an author is white, ensure that the author is not writing on behalf of the lived experience of neurodivergent people of color, and rather only their own lived experiences. **This list is already overwhelmingly white.** - preferably do not overly center a romantic/sexual plot or self-help - preferably do have an audiobook - does not sensationalize the "supercrip" narrative of people "succeeding in capitalism-despite their disabilities" Attempts were made to vet books for positive and meaningful representation, but since I have not yet read all the books there may be gaps. For some characters, especially those who may be undiagnosed, the traits associated with coding a character with autism from the perspective of the reader may resonate more with some than others, since autism is not one singular experience and is influenced by many intersectionalities. As someone who was late-diagnosed with autism, I am looking for more books to read and share as I learn more about this identity from a new perspective. Please let me know if there are concerns with any books I listed here. Considerations were made for books selected as a part of the Autistic Book Club and those shared on Mastodon upon request. This list is a personal curation so I will add and remove on my own discretion. I do not claim to speak for the entire autism community through these books and if I turn out not to personally like them or obsessively love them. 29 books - by pixouls@bookwyrm.social
