How a toxic #fungus became the #koji mold that brings us soy sauce
knowablemagazine.org/content/a #fungi

"#Aspergillus oryzae helps to bring us #SoySauce, sake and other traditional Asian foods. It does so by breaking down proteins and starches so that other #microbes can finish off the #fermentation. But A. oryzae wasn’t always so obliging. The wild version makes potent #toxins that can poison the consumer and lead to #cancer. Plus, it’s a destructive agricultural #pest... What changed?"

Imported pests and broad-spectrum pesticide regulation

"A “wildly toxic” chemical used to combat fire ants and the varroa mite in Australia is banned in Europe and harmful to humans – and it is poisoning waterways and killing native fauna, experts warn."

"Australia is “a basket case” in that the chemical regulator answers to the department of agriculture, rather than to the department of health, as in Japan, the US and Europe, said Landos."

"NSW MP Emma Hurst of the Animal Justice party said: “It is time for Australia to catch up to the rest of the world and ban fipronil.”"

Aquatic ecosystems marinated in a mixture of toxic chemicals?

"Menindee fish kills: inconsistent pesticide levels sparks calls for review of water testing methods. Experts call for review after two sets of water samples from the Darling-Baaka River reported by the state’s top scientific bodies contained different results"

“Atrazine, simazine, tebuthiuron and metolachlor are no longer approved for use in the European Union and have been classified by the European Chemicals Agency as being “very toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects”, but they are still approved for use in Australia."

"Vincent Pettigrove, a professor of aquatic pollution at RMIT, said while the guideline values provided an indication of whether the chemicals of interest were at concentrations which may cause environmental harm, there were no national guidelines for “the majority of pesticides registered for use in Australia ...The guideline values are for one chemical and were therefore “unable to consider the total effects of a mixture of chemicals”.

Wool can be made without killing animals. I think we need to go back to using #hemp, #wood and #wool -- and less synthetics. But most of all, make furniture and rugs that last -- so generation after generation can use them!

What You Need to Know About #OffGassing

Even after an install, a project’s furnishings and finishes can leach harmful chemicals into the air for years through a process called off-gassing. Here’s how you can combat it.

by Audrey Gray

"'Okay, I want to tell you about some things,' she recalls telling her client, going on to carefully explain the dangers inherent in both flooring choices—primarily the health impacts of chemical inhalants. Not only would these #chemicals flood a home during the installation of new #carpet or #vinyl planks, but they would continue to gradually leach into the air for years to come—a more subtle (but dangerous) process referred to as off-gassing. Thompson didn’t want her client’s family exposed to a vapor stew of chemicals every day, least of all in the yoga space, where the whole point was to breathe deeply while near the floor.

"She offered her client some carefully sourced options such as an all-wool carpet with a natural #rubber pad, and advocated for solid, #sustainably sourced wood downstairs instead of a composite of plastics. 'I thought she’d be excited,' Thompson says. 'But because of her beliefs about animal rights, I learned that wool wasn’t acceptable to her…and there were price point issues too. I thought, ‘Wow, this is a whole new level I hadn’t encountered.’”

"Welcome to what materials experts call 'one of the most complicated issues in health and wellness,' the murky and unregulated (at least in the U.S.—Europe is much stricter) relationships humans have with thousands of airborne #toxins emanating from our building materials, #furnishings, #CleaningProducts, #CarInteriors, #iPads, and even #candles.

"'Nobody’s telling you what is coming from all those vapors mixing in the air,' says Jillian Pritchard Cooke, the founder of Wellness Within Your Walls, an education consultancy focused on dramatically reducing the dangers of off-gassing in the built environment. 'It’s up to us to understand the individual effects each chemical can have on your #NervousSystem, your #lungs, and your cellular makeup. We need to be doing right by our clients.'

"Designers have, of course, been aware of the dangers of volatile organic compounds (#VOCs) for a long time, and have helped influence some wins in the marketplace, like the rising popularity of low- or no-VOC paints and the 2015 ban Home Depot and Lowe’s instituted in 2015 on toxic #phthalates (a class of industrial chemicals that help make plastic bendy) in flooring.

"But the problem endures, and unfortunately, many of the worst effects of VOCs—showing up in health conditions—accumulate over long periods of time.

"One of the best arguments for incorporating #vintage pieces in design, apart from saving space in landfills and decreasing carbon emissions, is that they are far safer from an off-gassing perspective. #Recycling building materials (for instance, saving the doors during a retrofit) helps too."

How do pesticides get into oysters?
Walking along estuaries in NSW, one finds that most oysters have been 'harvested' by very hungry people. And no, not by oystercatchers.

"Pesticide residue from farms and towns is ending up in fresh oysters. Most of the herbicides, insecticides and fungicides we found are used routinely by farmers, land managers and council workers."

"Four pesticides – atrazine, diuron, hexazinone and metolachlor – were found in concentrations above safe environmental limits for fresh and marine water.
The sheer number of different pesticides we found in oysters was perhaps the biggest concern for lovers of oysters. Five of these – pebulate, vernolate, fosetyl Al, benomyl and prothiofos – have residue limits set at zero for meat."

Gut #microbiota and #neurological effects of #glyphosate

by Lola Rueda-Ruzafa , Francisco Cruz, Pablo Roman, Diana Cardona

August, 2019

"There are currently various concerns regarding certain #environmental #toxins and the possible impact they can have on developmental diseases. #Glyphosate (Gly) is the most utilised #herbicide in #agriculture, although its widespread use is generating controversy in the scientific world because of its probable carcinogenic effect on human cells. Gly performs as an inhibitor of 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phospate synthase (EPSP synthase), not only in plants, but also in bacteria. An inhibiting effect on EPSP synthase from intestinal microbiota has been reported, affecting mainly beneficial bacteria. To the contrary, Clostridium spp. and Salmonella strains are shown to be resistant to Gly. Consequently, researchers have suggested that Gly can cause #dysbiosis, a phenomenon which is characterised by an imbalance between beneficial and pathogenic #microorganisms. The overgrowth of bacteria such as #clostridia generates high levels of noxious metabolites in the #brain, which can contribute to the development of neurological deviations. This work reviews the impact of Gly-induced intestinal #dysbiosis on the central nervous system, focusing on emotional, neurological and #neurodegenerative disorders. A wide variety of factors were investigated in relation to brain-related changes, including highlighting #genetic abnormalities, pregnancy-associated problems, diet, infections, vaccines and heavy metals. However, more studies are required to determine the implication of the most internationally used herbicide, Gly, in behavioural disorders."

#Farmers allege link between popular #herbicide and #Parkinsons disease

November 29, 2023

"It is against the law to use #paraquat in China, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and dozens of other countries. Many countries have banned the herbicide due to its extreme #toxicity, while others have expressed concerns over the possible risk for Parkinson's disease.

"Yet the herbicide, manufactured by a #Swiss company that is owned by the #Chinese state, is still widely used throughout the #UnitedStates in part because it is a highly effective way to kill weeds.

"The company, Syngenta, says that paraquat, which it produces under the name Gramoxone, 'is safe for its intended and labelled use.'

"Clayton Tucholke, who used Gramoxone for years on his farm in LaBolt, #SouthDakota, and has since been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, says otherwise.

"'It should have been pulled, I think, you know, so it didn't happen to somebody else,' Tucholke told ABC News.

"A 76-year-old father and grandfather, Tucholke lived on his farm with his wife Denise, but as the symptoms of #Parkinson's have worsened, he says he was forced to give up his career in #agriculture and had to move to the nearby town of Milbank to be closer to medical professionals.

"Daily tasks have become arduous for Tucholke, who now has to travel to physical therapy three times a week to slow the progression of his symptoms.

"'This man was so independent,' Denise Tucholke said. 'And his independence has been taken from him, which is unfair.'

"The Tucholkes are among the more than 4,000 Americans who have filed lawsuits as part of a multi-district litigation against #Syngenta, which currently manufactures #Gramoxone, and #Chevron, which distributed it in the U.S. from 1966 until 1986.

"Although Syngenta and Chevron told ABC News that there is no scientific evidence that supports a causal link between #paraquat and #Parkinsonsdisease, the Tucholkes and other plaintiffs allege that such a link exists, arguing that Syngenta and Chevron knew or should have known that the #herbicide could 'cause severe #neurological injuries.'

"'Our daughter and son-in-law are still #farming. I think any time [a] chemical is applied to the fields that they have to use, they should know what's going to happen,' Denise Tucholke said.

"'All the generations that are coming up afterwards need to know,' she said."

There’s a Big Problem With Your Car’s Tires
"Last week, the Environmental Protection Agency formally acknowledged the ecological damage wreaked by tire pollution. The agency announced that it would investigate the toxicity of 6PPD, a necessary step toward a potential ban on its widespread use in tire manufacturing. According to knowledgeable people I checked with, this is the first time that a federal agency has formally considered tires’ ecological harm. At long last, the U.S. is thinking beyond the tailpipe to examine hidden ways that cars befoul the planet."

As you rub cosmetic products onto your skin, breathe in their scents or use them to brush your teeth, the chemicals found within can travel throughout your body, targeting your endocrine, nervous and cardiovascular systems.

Endocrine disruptors, such as phthalates and PFAS, can mimic naturally produced hormones or block hormone receptors. And that’s hazardous to your #health – potentially interfering with #fertility, and fetal development.
