You know when you're in terminal, start Control-R’ing (searching history), and realize you can't remember the command you're looking for? Or what it does? That thing I typed that does that something? Yes, I could start scrolling backwards through the history to see if I can trick myself into rememebering…

Clearly, this is a sign I should just type exit until I remember what mischief I was about to do. 🤣 #Friday #Sysop #Sysadmin

:repost_ok: (pls boost for federation) attention social fediverse instance admins who host their instance using their personal computer!!!

i have several questions about self hosting, if you're willing to answer that'd be very much appreciated
:BlobCat_Heart:

- what are your system specs?
- what software are you hosting?
- how many users are there? how much activity is there?
- how does it run? how many resources does it use up (federation counted)?

thank youuu

Everyday life is busy enough - I'm here solely to interact w/people in a friendly manner - if that's you I look forward to rapping w/ya!

I here by declare I have opened my server to the public. I'm going to keep it rather small. If you like an account you'll have to accept things are prone to change as this server is experimental and hosted by one person.

I will take no pressure from this nor blame for anything. I will take it chill. I will cherish you and appreciate you, but won't necessarily wish for any influx. Let's see how it goes. :bunhdheart:

mementomori.social

Mastodon hosted on mementomori.socialMemento moriMementomori.social is a social media for mortals. We connect with the Fediverse, used by millions. This instance is backed by a Finnish company, digital web agency Digitoimisto Dude Oy.

@vga256 I was still too young to go to "Adult" meetings like this, so I was at the very tail end of everything. I will have to ask the #Sysop if she has just more than the one in the picture. I did ask a year ago to show me what she had and she did not save much of anything. Just like these days of being a Masto Sysop, it takes a person with thick skin to deal with some of the users. I think when she was done, she was done. I asked her if I could bring it back here and yes was the answer.

There is a little bit of a history behind this Mastodon Instance. SMUG stands for "Sequoia Macintosh Users Group" It was a BBS operated using #FirstClass server in #Humboldt County, #California. It went offline a very long time ago. I found the original domain (htan.org) bought it and now we are here. ❤️ 😎 Attached are some images from the original #sysop. SMUGgler's was the first online experience I had at home as a young little nerd. 🤓

Look forward to rapping w/ya!

Back when I was a teenager, before the Internet was a thing, I was the #SYSOP (System Operator) of a #BBS (bulletin board system). People would dial into my computer via my cutting-edge 9600 bps modem and post messages on discussion boards, send email to other users of the system, etc. Running a Mastodon instance reminds me of that, although federation takes it to the next level. I hope I can do this long term, because it’s way way cooler than Twitter and feels like going back to my roots.

Redoing my #Introduction to include hashtags

About myself:
I was in tech pretty early as a kid, can't afford my own tech so had to use public resources to teach myself.

Past life (1980s-90s): Ran a BBS and a network, created BBS sharewares, created game hack/cheats, wrote game walkthrough FAQs. This is where part of my nick (pH_) came from. I spent >10 years coding sharewares and helping pre-college students with their programming projects, and being rejected by all the universities in my ex-country for no "proper training in computer science".

(2000s) Ran my own web development business for a bit, but I pulled out of it before the 'fast food' style of DIY website wizards hit the industry. It was at the same time I realised car detailing is a much more lucrative business.

Present life: a systems/network engineer for a couple of decades, network and security architect for the next decade plus. I'm in infosec currently, they call me an architect, my ex-manager calls me the adult in a room. I help business owners to "get" infosec and risks. I draw boxes all day

Interests:
I am obsessed with lego, I am learning photography for about 20 years now. I game a lot.
I watch too much anime and play too much JRPG.
i also appreciate: Web comics, art, memes
I generally want to do too many things and have too little time to do all of it.

Things I'm currently learning: pentesting, malware analysis, rust, solving a rubik's cube.

I don't expect to find old friends here, but I hope to make new ones in my journey to better myself.

(and none of the above are answers to security questions :P)

Redoing my #Introduction since I’m on a new server.

Hi! After studying chemistry, I’ve spent the last twenty five years in IT, first as a #Web1.0 programmer and #sysop during the 90’s, then in #itsupport and #dataanalyst roles this century.

I read “My Side of the Mountain” and “The Mysterious Island” as a kid and have always been fascinated with a diy approach to civilization: #camping, #gardening, #hamradio, and #brewing.
