I gave a presentation about my experience re-visiting my dissertation after 4 years at the last Open Science Community Eindhoven meet-up.

In the end, I was able to set up my dissertation to reproduce with 3 lines of code—after 4 years.

This is the link to a survey about loot boxes in video games that I need specifically only people from the Netherlands to fill in. Excited to attend my first PhD defence at TU Delft: Daniël Vos will be defending his thesis "Decision Tree Learning: Algorithms for Robust Prediction and Policy Optimization", containing work he did under supervision of Prof. Dr. Ir. R.L. Lagendijk and Dr. Ir. Sicco Verwer.

It's been another big year as I work towards completing my #dissertation on voice dataset documentation and how it influences how well #speech technologies work for all voices at the #ANU School of Cybernetics - with big thanks to my supervisors, Elizabeth Williams, Alexandra Zafiroglu, Jofish Kaye and Paul Wong 黃仲熙.

I've wrapped up a partnership with Mozilla's #CommonVoice team, which let me explore the hashtag#dataset in a lot more detail - big thanks EM Lewis-Jong, @jessie Dmitrij Feller in particular.

It was an incredible honor to keynote #FF24 at the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia alongside Peter-Lucas Jones of Te Hiku Media, expertly facilitated by Keir Winesmith - thanks @ingridbmason and team for the opportunity - and stay tuned for a little project we are working on - we know you're all eager for the video of this keynote, but we're adding a little more magic.

I helped out with @everythingopen Media and Comms this year, and am looking forward to speaking in January in Adelaide.

as suggested by @erica, i’m going to start thesisposting and see if that motivates me enough to get stuff done

right now my supervisor expects a completed introduction by tomorrow 3pm and i already have the one from my project proposal, so i just have to take what i wrote and make it longer and more detailed, maybe split it up into specific sections

i also need to put my entire routine back together to make sure i actually get enough sleep so that im clearheaded enough to do stuff and write my thesis. coffee doesn’t work on me and just makes me feel sleepy so this is the only way

also i need to start using overleaf for my thesis instead of word because my god i hate word. i told myself i would use latex for my thesis and im committing to it, and it shouldn’t be that difficult since i’ve messed around with it before. i also need to create the actual report structure, at least for the introduction and the literature review

for the literature review i probably have a max of 2 weeks to start that and read around 50-60 papers, categorise them in a matrix, and write the entire review so… i guess future me can worry about that

thats it i think. im also terrible at figuring out how long specific tasks take (another consequence of adhd probably) but hopefully i can at least make good progress on the introduction and start getting my normal life back today

As I near the end of my final two taught modules of my MPA, I'm thinking about the topic for my #thesis/ #dissertation

Having worked and campaigned for decades in #science and #technology, I am studying #PublicAdministration to better grasp why #debate, #decisions and #policy seem so divorced from the #knowledges available

For now, I'm referring to this as the "knowledge-decision gap" - probably naively, I've not had much time to dig into the field

For example #ClimateChange, #AI, #Health policies seem divorced from the #expertise of #academics in these fields. And the real-world #experience of citizens is poorly accounted for in #politics.

There are #vestedInterests, #lobbying, #biases, #prejudice and plain #ignorance. Are there patterns in the #KnowledgeDecisionGap that we can learn from - commonalities across fields? Are there examples of great success or appalling failure in transferring #knowledge into #decision? What do we already know? Where are the gaps in our knowledge about gaps ?

The subject is still wide open for me and due to be honed in April. I'd be delighted if anyone can chuck thoughts, ideas, references, comments my way

I have a Ph.D. in Human Science (2016, Saybrook University), which is about the experience of being human in social contexts. It is the mother of the social sciences but is now, at least in the English speaking world, and at least as far as I can tell, a dead field.

I studied #conservatism for my #dissertation. And yes, the #Democrats are far too #conservative for me.

Once upon a time, a very, very long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, I was a computer programmer. It was the wrong career choice.

I am a #vegan #LibertarianSocialist (recovering #anarchist) mostly from the #SanFrancisco #BayArea in #California, presently residing in #Pittsburgh, #Pennsylvania, hoping to move to #erie

In #kyriarchy, I mostly focus on #classism and #ageism, but since arriving in Pittsburgh, have been confronted with blatant #racism (and yes, many white people here do see it). But #SocialJustice has to be for everybody; to focus on any one identity, to the exclusion of others, is nothing more than to elevate that identity over that of the predominantly wealthy white males who are now in charge.

I oppose all #imperialism and #SettlerColonialism, not just U.S. and NATO imperialism and settler-colonialism. Having lived on the underbelly of #capitalism most of my life, I am #anticapitalist and ferociously opposed to #neoliberalism. I oppose physical and structural violence.

Human beings have #HumanRights. These rights are not constrained by their governments' failures to ratify certain human rights treaties.

#Borders exist to mark off territory controlled by elites whose competition accounts for most if not all wars and to deny human beings on the "wrong" side of an arbitrary line rights and privileges available on the "right" side. This cannot be justified ethically. I am hostile to #xenophobia

Finally, I am pessimistic about the future of humanity. #COVID19 and the #ClimateCrisis demonstrate our unfitness for survival.

Finished up a blog post on dissertation writing barriers. I talk about getting to the "I hate my dissertation" stage of the PhD, why naming reasons for my "hate" was useful, and ways I've been tricking myself into getting the work done anyway.

It felt good to blog (or do "regular writing") again. Now unfortunately I have to get back to that #dissertation.
