I entered the #ComputationalLinguistics field in 2018 by enrolling for a Bachelor's degree.

Since then, a lot has changed. Almost all the things we learned about, programmed in practice and did research on are now nearly irrelevant in our day-to-day.

Everything is #LLMs now. Every paper, every course, every student project.

And the newly enrolled students changed, too. They're no longer language nerds, they're #AI bros.

I miss #CompLing before ChatGPT.

Howdy,

I'm new so here's an
#Introduction post. I'm a nerd. I play #Arknights and #NeuralCloud as my main gacha addictions. I've been on a #StardewValley kick lately. I'm not actually all that good at most video games but I enjoy watching people play them on #YouTube and #Twitch.

I put my masters degrees to excellent use by delivering food for Grubhub after my doctoral program did work out. Tips on
#JobHunt in #DataScience, #SoftwareEngineer, #ComputationalLinguistics, or related fields would be appreciated.

I'm slowly coming out of my shell exploring what it means to be a
#furry. It's fun but kinda intimidating.

In the pre-covid days, I used to DM a ton of
#DungeonsAndDragons. I even organized a con for it back in Colorado. Haven't really found a new group to get back into it yet.

I'm dipping my toes in the water on a new server because the extra features over
#Mastodon are intriguing.

A wee #introduction since there are lots of folks joining or rejoining the fediverse in general and Mastodon in particular.

I'm Dave, a #queer #Catholic who runs and sings for fun. I play #VideoGames (currently #Titanfall2) and watch a lot of #Dropout (#Dimension20, #PlayItByEar, #GameChanger are faves), #VideoEssays, and #anime.

I recently went to my first #burn (not #BurningMan, tho) and am digging the inclusive accepting culture.

At work I'm a #researcher in #ComputationalLinguistics focused on #NaturalLanguageGeneration and #psycholinguistics methods. You could say my dayjob is trying to develop a more ethical #ChatGPT

Feel free to ask me questions about #Mastodon if you are #NewHere

When I started in #ComputationalLinguistics / #NLProc, some of the stuff with word embeddings and topic modeling felt like kind of a stretch re: what we could do with language models, but at least the formalisms were interesting and it felt like there was an effort to treat it as exploratory and not "hey language models understand language!" Now it feels like the field has been co-opted by all the #MathyMaths and #TESCREAL bullshit, and I so desperately want to get back to real #CompLing

You Are Not a Parrot: “And a chatbot is not a human. And a linguist named Emily M. Bender is very worried what will happen when we forget this.”

“Work on synthetic human behavior is a bright line in ethical Al development, where downstream effects need to be understood and modeled in order to block foreseeable harm to society and different social groups.”

I believe that we won't solve the current AI debates until we take meaning seriously. Unfortunately, neither meaning nor semantics ever makes it in the news, so the general public is badly equipped to judge what is lacking in AI.

Hoping to fill a gap, I am starting a website dedicated to meaning and computation, and directed to general audiences:

denotation.io/about/

New content will be posted every month. Please check it out 🙂

@grammargirl I don't keep up with style guides so your post made me second guess my gut. My brain says that the word most likely to follow "uppercase" is "characters" (I read Python all day long). So I checked the stats in English books and the rank order is:

1. ... letters
2. ... characters
3. ... words
4. ... titles
5. ... names
(singular nouns rank the same, right after each plural noun)

A (re) #introduction for a new instance: I am professor of #DigitalHumanities at the University of #Lausanne (#UNIL), #Switzerland.

I studied #ComputationalLinguistics and did a PhD in #ComputerScience on #ELearning. But these days my main research interest is #theory, #methodology, and #epistemology of digital humanities.

Current research project (funded by @snsf_ch): Towards Computational Historiographical Modeling: Corpora and Concepts (dynalabs.de/mxp/research/2021-).

#introduction 🙂

I've been a researcher in the field of #computationallinguistics for over 15 years. Interested in #semantics, #cognitivescience, energy-efficient and ethical #AI systems. I've worked at the universities of Cambridge, Potsdam, Stuttgart and Trento, with a brief stint at Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona.

I am one of the core developers of PeARS (pearsproject.org/), a slow but friendly open-source project aiming at developing a fully private, decentralised Web search engine.
