The Conan Doyle pub at night (with added light trails) flickr.com/photos/woolamaloo_g

Yes, it is named for the creator of Sherlock Holmes, whose childhood home was just across the road from this spot (a statue of Sherlock stands nearby too), because, yes, in Edinburgh, even pubs are historic and cultural.

Folklore is full of tales of secret tunnels. It's claimed one runs from the George and Pilgrims Inn to Glastonbury Abbey. The tunnel, said to have been built in the late 1400s on the orders of Abbot Selwood, was apparently explored in the early 20th century by a Mrs Bilbrough. She edged down "a flight of fearfully steep steps, dark and damp and slippery' before finding the passage 'was only three feet in height, so that those who used it must have crawled on their hands and knees, resting at intervals where ledges are cut in the sides for that purpose." Another tunnel - reputed to run from the crypt of Glastonbury's Lady Chapel under the River Brue to the town of Street - is said to have been successfully navigated by a dog. #folklore #weird #gothic #psychogeography #tunnels #Glastonbury #pub #pubs #history

Intriguingly, in the clouds above the ship is a spitfire, complete with RAF roundels. Given that this stained glass is purported to date from a refit of the bar in 1938, this seems to foreshadow the pivotal role the Queen Mary would come to play in World War II as a troop-carrier, starting just two years later in 1940.

Statue of the 'Golden Boy of Pye Corner', City of London. The statue marks where the Great Fire of 1666 stopped. One theory for the Fire was that it was a Divine punishment for the sin of gluttony, as it had started in a bakery in Pudding Lane. Therefore, the boy was made - at least by the standards of the time - to be extremely plump. He was originally built into a pub called 'The Fortune of War', which was pulled down in 1910. This pub - just round the corner from Barts Hospital - was a favoured venue for body snatchers. One room had benches round the walls where the bodies were displayed and the surgeons from the hospital would come and appraise them. #London #history #folklore #psychogeography #gothic #pub #medicine #death

#Introduction (2)

Support #WomensRugby (#HarlequinsWomen and the #RedRoses), and - for my sins - #Pompey and #England #Football.

Love #BoardGames (#Carcassonne, #QuacksOfQuedlinberg, #TicketToRide) and #Wargaming (#BloodBowl, #MoonStone, #Oathmark, #BurrowsAndBadgers).

Trying to get back into #Running after an achilles injury and love a long #Walk or two. #Walking usually involves a #Pub since I love my #Beer and #RealAle.

Looking forward to interacting with you lovely folks in 2025.

First visit to the newly opened Brass Monkey that took over former Jessie May's (itself the former Station Bar, *way* back) on #Gorgie Road.

Love the Drummond St one, nice to see them taking over this spot, altho mildly disappointed there are no real ale taps (Edinburgh being a real ale Mecca). Some nice IPA on electric tap, but would prefer the hand pumped ale myself.
