Lately I've been wondering how I could contribute to open source projects despite not being a programmer and not having money for donations, and then I found out about #localisation. For the past couple of days I've been doing some translations for #mozilla projects, mainly #thunderbird, and having my strings aproved has been really satisfying. I love how intuitive Mozilla's localisation interface is.

Serious #gamedev #career question:

Everyone's advised to build a portfolio w/ hobby projects to get into the #games industry. But while programmers can program games, designers can design on-paper and artists can create art... what does someone do who wants to get into #marketing or #localisation?

Game jams are usually said to be the best path to experience, but jams don't need marketing or translators. Can't join an indie project without real experience either. So?

As a hobbyist/amateur gamedev, It's cool learning all the things you never knew you needed to know.

Outrageously frustrating at times, but also v cool.

Currently thinking about translations and localisations.

Does anyone #gamedev know how to approach getting translations for a largely non-text game done?

i.e. cost, how to find translators etc.

Talking stuff like maybe 200 words total, with i.g. 90% of those being 'menu words'

like, "Start game" and "Fullscreen" etc.

I'd vastly prefer having a person do the translation than machine, so I don't end up making gaffes like translating

Lead Programmer to "plomb programmeur" etc.

Hi,

I'm Xabi — pronounced shabby but I want to believe I don't live up to my name.
My posts are often about #AmateurRadio, the #Fediverse, software #localisation and #SelfHosting (10 years and counting!) although I also post about #cycling and/or #PublicTransport or share pictures — landscapes, cityscapes and airplanes mostly.

I love #swimming, hot chocolate and em dashes.

Into #nature and the #outdoors, #hiking, #neurodivergence, #ConsumerElectronics and #privacy, too.

hey, to anybody who speaks more than one language, as it is right now how badly would this UI element come across with the strings translated into your language?

as much as i like it how it is, i get the vibe it may be awkward to make work in some languages without redesigning it

Guterres is right.

But the biggest insanity is that humanity is letting this happen. Year after year of warnings go by without us reacting. These companies, backed by powerless externally controlled politicians, are harming us, our children and future generations.

We sit silently waiting. Waiting for someone else to prevent the catastrophe for us. We sit still while they rape our democracies and our livelihoods. Who wants to be the first to be so stupid as to put restrictions on the status quo? When we in the rich West are profiting so beautifully from our parasitic way of life?

Anyone who even occasionally consumes the news is aware that society has a serious problem. Passively waiting and ignoring the danger is an active choice.
Doing nothing is a supposedly easy choice. The easy way out in the short term? None of us has the power to change anything? So we just lie down and die? Give up without a fight?

But let me get this straight. We really want to knowingly just watch our children's livelihoods being taken away? We don't want to protect and care for each other and fight for a world worth living in? My friends, I don't get it.

We all have the power to change. Together we have all the power.

Now is the time to stick together and unite behind our common values.
Now is the time we want to leave selfishness and greed behind.
Now is the time for real change.
Now is the time to get serious.
Now is the time for survival.

All the letters have been written, all the petitions submitted, the conferences have ended, all the fears and concerns expressed. But the messages drip off like on a Teflon pan without a mark. Now is the time to get serious.

Take care of your loved ones. Take care of those who are fighting for survival and those who can't. Get serious!
