#localization

When I started the IC_Null channel the idea was to cover topics primarily about #cybersecurity, #hacking, #pentesting etc. from a #blind perspective. Blind as in #screenReader user, that is. But an overarching topic is showing off what jobs are (up to a point) doable for this demographic and where the obstacles are. Today's stream leans that way: we'll be looking at the premier #translation and #localization tool, Trados Studio. Supposedly they have upped their #accessibility as of late. I'll be the judge of that 💀
I'll see you all on #youtube and #twitch just under 1.5 hours from now. https://twitch.tvic_null youtube.com/@blindlyCoding #selfPromo #stream #trados

→ Nigerians are building affordable alternatives to AWS and #Google Cloud
restofworld.org/2025/aws-googl

“The payments to #AWS gradually skyrocketed as the naira depreciated around 70% against the #dollar between 2020 and 2024”

“Besides the option to pay in #naira, these companies allow #Nigerians to store their #data within the #country — an advantage most of their Western rivals lack. #Local servers give businesses the benefits of low #latency and data #localization […].”

Rest of World · Nigerians are building affordable alternatives to AWS and Google CloudLocal cloud startups offer data sovereignty at a time when the debate about who has access to a country’s data is heating up.

compulsive localization of a random comic for children ("斗罗大陆"); mostly I just like the word "myriad" and want everyone to know it literally means ten thousand (the literal text is like "a soul beast of ten years, a soul beast of a hundred years...,")

TIL my halo is purple.

Last year I worked with a lovely neurodivergent client, Tahlee Rouillon, and her partner, Harley, on localizing their app to Brazilian Portuguese.

Restful is an app that helps you to relax effortlessly. There are both free and paid versions.

One of the things I enjoyed the most about the project was to learn more about a CAT tool called POEditor.

I'd never translated .arb files before, and my offline CAT tool apparently doesn't recognize ARB as a valid translatable file, so I had to look for a different one, and there it was, and for free! POEditor does have a premium version, but I didn't have to purchase it because the project contained a moderate amount of words.

I'll soon add this project to my online portfolio. You can check out my latest entertainment projects here: renatafernandestranslation.com

When I got into the localization business, I'd never in a gazillion years would have thought I'd want to work with game loc.

I wasn't a gamer per se as a kid. I had a mini game, but that was it. I hated losing, and I didn't have fun with games because of all of that pressure to succeed.

But here we are! Beginner cozy gamer, fresh out of a fun, informative game loc course. Kinda addicted to The Sims 4.

One main takeaway from the course:

There's lots of kinds of games out there! Including educational games, which is often not a path most translators think of pursuing when they consider game loc.

Below is my certificate 😍

Hi! Renata here. I'm a Brazilian English-Portuguese (and Portuguese-English) translator based in the Greater Rio de Janeiro area. I'm autistic, and my brand new goal in life is to work with more neurodivergent business owners. I specialize in audiovisual content and health & wellness, and I've been at it since 2017. This is my account to talk biz, sometimes in all seriousness, at times not. If you're a neurodivergent entrepreneur, I'd love to connect 😍

Serious #gamedev #career question:

Everyone's advised to build a portfolio w/ hobby projects to get into the #games industry. But while programmers can program games, designers can design on-paper and artists can create art... what does someone do who wants to get into #marketing or #localisation?

Game jams are usually said to be the best path to experience, but jams don't need marketing or translators. Can't join an indie project without real experience either. So?

Only about a week remaining for submitting a talk at the Inclusive Web devroom in FOSDEM 2025. The last date for submission is 30th November, 2024. If you are someone who works in security, privacy, accessibility, localisation or any other topic that you feel makes the web inclusive and usable by everyone, you should definitely submit a talk! FOSDEM is a conference for people passionate about FOSS and I feel it's really important to discuss these topics in this space, so that Open Source tools for the web can be more inclusive.

Anyone know how I get openstreetmap.org to give me English names consistently across the map? Do I need to login?

Seems like it would be useful to detect the localisation of the browser, and provide a button for toggling between displaying names in the local language (which seems to be the default), and displaying in the language indicated by browser localisation.
