I just got reminded in a discussion about #ttrpg related music that the opening music of Hayore Nyaruko-san openly references Call of Cthulhu game mechanics.

Which might have been obscured in the West by fansubbers not knowing wth SAN is.

(the anime also multiple times shows CoC character sheets and die rolls when dramatic stuff happens)

;) #pnp

This isn't something you can hide anymore. This will be clear to anyone with access to an LLM and the wherewithall to see what defines community morale.

Basically this means that as I've always said: THE #COC IS OPTIONAL, and that is intentional. Now you can allow people to play favourites, have insider cliques, enforcers, yada-yada-yada and so forth.

When public officials then figure this out, they will avoid you like the plague, because they already have previous experience with this sort.

Boost for reach please!

otter.technologyCode of Conduct Enforcement Training – Otter Tech

Hello o/ I am excited to announce Bechamel a collective around the software knows as Guix (which most people use through the Gnu channel of Guix)

Bechamel is something I started as a much easier way for people to contribute to a guix channel (no emailing patches, workflow not built around Emacs, xmpp used instead of irc). It also aims to be a more private and safes space to contribute to Guix things (like using the JoinJabber CoC and the soon the Cooperative Software Development Guidelines) among other things. Rationale: codeberg.org/Guix_Bechamel/col

There are also some other plans including tackling the long-standing accessibility problems in Guix, adding pilul support to guix, rust/python build system improvements and much improved and updated support for xmpp things. Hopefully you are going to see me post a lot more about it from now on :)
At the moment it has updated Gajim the XMPP client to 1.9.5 which brings around 2 years of updates. It also has started having some extensive practical documentation around Guix. And some other things like cerca the forum software.

- Repository for packages (gajim/cerca): codeberg.org/Guix_Bechamel/gui
- Repository for the Bechamel collective including Documentation codeberg.org/Guix_Bechamel/col
- Organization in Codeberg codeberg.org/Guix_Bechamel

Do you need Code of Conduct Enforcement training in 2025?

Fill out my workshop time survey:

Help me figure out what time to run my monthly Code of Conduct Enforcement workshops.

otter.technology/code-of-condu

With people needing training in Europe, Africa, Asia, Latin America, and North America, it's impossible to find one single workshop time that works for everyone. So each month I pick a different time zone to best accommodate.

If you are a conference organizer, please let me know which month and time you need training!

You can either fill out the form, or send an email to sharp@otter.technology

Google Docs2025 CoC workshop schedule surveyOtter Tech runs monthly workshops, which help people enforce a Code of Conduct. The workshop is great for both online community moderators and in-person event organizers. This survey is for people who are interested in attending the Code of Conduct workshop, or who need to train a group of people. Your input will help me find the best time to run my workshop each month. If you (optionally) provide your email address, I may contact you to remind you about the workshop dates you were interested in attending.

Hey long time no see :D

I am revising currently the @joinjabber
CoC listed here joinjabber.org/about/community
with some things that are long overdue to be added like the Public Health Pledge I saw from the excellent @onepict and also the permacomputing principles that i was introduced by @320x200

I also want to add some kind of commitment to safety and give platform to under represented groups kind of like outreachy does it. Is anybody aware of any document that i can get inspiration from or link directly like the Health Pledge? Feel free to share of course :D

JoinJabberCode of ConductJoinJabber is a community dedicated to the concern of participants in the Jabber federated network. It promotes cultural diversity and international cooperation; we want to empower people to communicate without any form of oppression or barriers. See our goals for more information. This code of conduct applies to all our spaces, including our xmpp channels and events/sprints, both online and off. If you are being harassed by a member of JoinJabber outside our spaces, we still want to know about it.

I think my “bucket list” of grand campaigns I want to run someday are:

Red Cow — Glorantha
Great Pendragon Campaign — Pendragon
Darkening of Mirkwood — One Ring

Ones I’ve already done and would recommend:

Modron March / Infinite Staircase / Dead Gods — Planescape
Masks of Nyarlathotep — Dark Heresy
Enemy Within — Warhammer Fantasy

@juergen_hubert @Kenan @satchel I would even argue, that in the German language area #dnd5e / #corpodnd led to a diversification of „the“ #ttrpg scene:
a) New and especially younger (!) players entered the hobby via 5e.
b) New 5e players seem to be more open to other games as compared to veteran players stuck in what I refer to as the „potato 🇩🇪 triangle“: #DasSchwarzeAuge (genre: trad clunk 😜) + #CoC + #Shadowrun, three games that used to dominate

After a recent discussion with @smallcircles I decided to post an example of a good CoC (in my mind) and also good rules for community governance.

It seemed clear to me that there is not many good examples out there including participate.coding.social/

What I consider good CoC and good community rules are rules that take into account:

- The amount of harm tech "optimism" mentality does to a community and society as a whole.
- The amount of harm and disproportionate incentives and abilities including for profit - capitalist companies does to a community. looking at w3 for example.
- The amount of harm including states, cops, weapons and everything that comes with them brings to a community. nixos and element also learned this.

Good community culture rules can build on top of that to show what can find of culture is encouraged and signal to people what kind of behavior is tolerated or not. A good community relies on people to speak up autonomously without always going to a moderator.
