While biking the coastal trail Sunday eve, we met Salinas residents David, a teacher, and his daughter, Priscilla, home on spring break from her CalPoly classes.

Among the topics we touched on was April 10-13 Sea Otter Classic, which we think of as one big bike party! Who it’s for, how to get free admission, and history of #SeaOtterClassic: bikemonterey.org/april-10-13-s

"The advocacy organizations that have been working locally and regionally for years are still there, still doing good work, and more necessary than ever….Join CalBike….Join other local, regional, or national groups doing work you care about and support them with money, time, or both.”

“The EPA tested for one of the pollutants that measures air quality index – particulate size. This is what the Monterey Bay Air Resource District (MBARD) does when it produces an evaluation of air quality. Neither agency tests for heavy metals. Heavy metals testing was done by Dr. Ivano Aiello of the Moss Landing Marine Labs around the Elkhorn Slough and by the California Department of Toxic Substances Control with Monterey County Environmental Health Department.”—Supervisor Glenn Church, District 2, Monterey County Board of Supervisors mailchi.mp/co/supervisor-churc

Steve Vagnini / SLV Events presents Songs of Love by Dan Frechette & Laurel Thomsen, plus opening act Magenta Spreen, at Wave Street Studios on Feb 14, 2025, 7-10 pm. Event link / tix: eventbrite.com/e/slv-presents-. Link to Dan & Laurel’s site: danandlaurel.ca/

Wave Street Studios is great location to bike/walk/scoot to. It’s directly along City of Monterey section of Monterey Bay coastal trail. (Planning to bike there & want to join a bike train? Phone us.) Sorry, skateboarders: "It is unlawful to ride a skateboard on Monterey Coastal Trail between head of Fisherman's Wharf and City limit with Pacific Grove.”—Section 22-14 Monterey City Code.

There’s a radiantly heated bench on patio, providing cozy place to sit if you prefer outdoor seating. Don’t miss Dan & Laurel performing in this extraordinary, beautiful venue.

For those who like alcohol, Wave Street has permit now. montereycountynow.com/news/loc

After a lifetime of biking & 15 years volunteering well over 22K unpaid hours as a bike advocate, in 2024 we got our 1st pricey bike. We’d admired those of others (including Velo Monterey rider with a $13K lightweight ebike—definitely not in our budget!).

Although a fraction of that cost—yet still far costlier than we’d ever had—a Tern NBD P8i became a necessity after covid impacted our riding ability. (In fact, for most of a yr we couldn’t really ride because we didn’t have a suitable post-covid bike.) A physical therapist who rides recommended Tern. We saw the Tern NBD—low to ground, wide step-thru, class 1 (no throttle) —at Sea Otter Classic.

But our budget couldn’t swing it. Then, bless them, getting a Tern became possible thanks to our son and daughter's support for our bike advocacy!

We found the best #Tern dealer in our local (#MontereyBay) region to be Current eBikes, #SantaCruz. Their service is excellent! currentebikes.com/local-ebikes

Our gratitude to Cory Steinmetz for a generous donation on December 26th in support of the Bicycling Monterey work. bikemonterey.org/2024-bicyclin

Biked to Monterey today, and first stop was Window on the Bay Park. Many community members had gathered, including Monterey County Supervisor Wendy Root Askew and Supervisor-Elect Kate Daniels. We’ll post more photos from our ride today in Autumn Bike Buzz on bikemonterey.org and/or here. For now, here are three favorites from today's community gathering at Window on the Bay.

Why California needs the Complete Streets Bill:

California Dept of #Transportation / #Caltrans is often the gap in the transport network. When Caltrans routes border or intersect with local #CompleteStreets projects, it’s vital that Caltrans follow these efforts; and that requires investing new money into complete streets.
